Re: Women running and safety
I'm a guy, but I run on dark trails quite a bit and so I bought this: http://www.amazon.ca/Sabre-Pepper-Spray-Military-Marking/dp/B002LIMPZC/ref=sr_1_6?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1443281776&sr=1-6" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Haven't had the chance to try it out yet (and hope...

Re: Herniated Disc
Thanks. I really lucked out with a back surgeon AND a neurologist who didn't want to do surgery on me. I was very lucky.

Herniated Disc
Hi all, this forum has been an amazing resource and inspiration for me and just wanted to quickly share my recovery from a herniated disc for future forum searchers. Long story short: started running in earnest in about 2008. Herniated a disc in my back a couple years later (L5-S1). Bad herniation. ...

Trying to reach back into the past to live the way people used to live is, in my opinion, evidence of a failure to recognize that we have evolved physiologically and now have different biological needs. I'm asking this because I find this topic interesting. In what ways have we evolved? What are th...

Lets say God designed my body and the food it needs from one blue print which if preserved would be the best for me. The God design for my body and for my food were perfectly compatible in the beginning. Of course, I can't go back there; but I can try to come as close as possible. So I am sharing m...

Stanford University Running Study
This is just a little segment by CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta about a twenty year long study on running that Standford University recently completed. It's probably old news to people here, but I thought some might be interested. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/health/2008/12/31/gupta.run.good.health.cnn

Thanks for all your replies! I decided to try the fig newtons out and they worked great. I think they might be easier to deal with than a bag of raisins. I'm gonna miss the taste of the espresso Hammer Gels but two fig newtons has the same calories and carbs as one gel and the price difference is hu...

Thanks for the responses! I'm gonna give the raisins a try tomorrow and see how it goes. I guess raisins would be missing the sodium that they add into most of the gels, but I'm hoping that the sodium in my gatorade will suffice. I'll report back, but will spare you all any details of any gastrointe...

Raisins instead of Gel?
I just read in Men's Health magazine that raisins are a good substitute for power gels. They're packed with carbs, fiber, etc. Does anybody eat raisins on long runs instead of taking gels? I am a student and the price of gels for my long runs is unfortunetely becoming a factor. Raisins are cheap and...

I had this problem a while back and I started stretching my IT band (just google "IT Band Stretches") and hamstrings every day. I also incorporated some exercises into my strength routine that worked my hip flexors. After a few weeks of this I was ready to run again and haven't had the same problem ...

Real slavery and indentured servitude happen today in North America, too. Even in Edmonton. I can't resist asking for examples. I can think of examples of indetured servitude in North America but I can't believe that anything approaching slavery still occurs anywhere in N.A. ... unless the definiti...

Seeking some speedwork advice
Hi everybody, I'm getting ready for Toronto's fall marathon and I've come to the realization that I have to add a speedwork routine into my weekly training(I've avoided it until now mostly due to ignorance of its importance). My problem is that I have no idea where to start. I've done quite a bit of...

The Spirit of the Marathon - The Movie
I just got back from the movie theatre...What an awesome movie!!! I loved how they tracked the training of the elites and of the average joes in the same movie. I totally felt like going for a run as soon as I left the theatre but I already did my LSD so I thought I'd do the next best thing and hit ...
