Re: Marathon runner caught bus to the finish line

As stated earlier, a 2:50 marathon being a "hobby" time may mean a rare podium visit for that person. I would be a bit pissed at missing my opportunity due to a cheater. I agree that a win shouldn't be the sole goal for racing, but in the event that the stars align on race day, I certainly...

It's sad, but I'd still rather die running than waste away on my couch.

Changes to Guaranteed Entry to NYC Marathon

@Ian - I agree about the half. The old 2:55 full requirement wasn't too out of reach but the half was definitely easier. That was my next goal, being only about a minute off my PB @ 1:23. Now at 1:19 it makes the required pace closer to my 5k pace!

Re: Hill intervals

Hmmm I seem to have missed the part about you doing this 2 weeks before your goal race. So in light, I would add that hill training should be done early in your program to build strength - not 2 weeks before. With 2 weeks to go, the hay is in the barn.

Re: Hill intervals

I won't comment on the science behind it, but hills are to me, the key ingredient in any good plan. I can always feel a difference in my running after a few weeks of hills. I've run them 2 ways. The first was hard up with a recovery jog down - repeat. The second, and what I currently run is hard up,...

Re: Best song to finish a race to

Thunderstruck - I get goosebumps every time I hear it, and think of approaching the finish line of a race while it is playing. I have no idea why, but it is THE song for me. Played near the 30k mark in Ottawa 2010 - was awesome. "8 Mile", "Bull's on Parade" , "Stranglehold&...

I think I want to race this month. Need to pick a 5 or 10k soon.
No mileage goal, just trying to keep the running to 4 days/week minimum.

Count me in! I need a 3:10, so I'm hoping to hit about 3:02 (5 minute pb).

Re: A First Pair of Trail Shoes

If your current shoes are working, I'd stick with them. Most people do just fine on trails without trail shoes. Yup, depending on if you ever plan on doing technical stuff you don't have to have them. It's going to depend on the type of trails you're running as well. ETA: my vote for a do-all trail...

Re: What is a marathon pace run supposed to feel like?

What people seem to forget is that in training you are running MP without the benefit of a taper: the accumulated fatigue of the previous weeks can be significant. This. I always find the MP runs during training tough. Not aerobically, but legs. They're lead, with no jump from the accumulated milea...

Re: Gatorade G Series Pro

I've used prime before a track workout with no stomach issues. I believe they used G02 in Boston this year, its a bit saltier but not gross. And I'll vouch for the recovery shakes just because they are delicious!

Re: Boston Registration

After reading through some posts around the Internet, I find it amusing that people are already talking about targeting their new BQ time since next year it should be enough. We should really take this year as a lesson to train your hardest and race your best race. Not just pace for a BQ. Who knows...

Re: Boston Registration

This may be old news but I noticed that they moved the Expo from the Hynes Center to Seaport World Trade Centre. For those who don't know, Hynes was right near the finish/Commons area and very convenient if you stayed near the finish. Seaport is near the harbour (duh!) but about 3-4 km from the fini...
