Re: Night run at Sulphur, Friday May 18th
Is there a reason for starting that late? I guess I could just show up at 9:30-ish and do an early loop...

R2r2r
Just a quick note. A group of OUSER runners, including a few a couple of RunningManiacs (and me, of course), successfully did the double traverse of the Grand Canyon on Tuesday. We all had a blast. The weather was perfect. On the way back, I personally left a trail of puke puddles along the ...

Re: Haliburton 2011
After my failed attempt at Mohican (DNF at 60 miles) and then running Burning River, I was left with an empty tank and had to take a break to catch up with life and work. I'm not ready for another 100 so I won't be racing at Haliburton but I will be pacing someone so I will see y'all over there. 26k...

Re: Burning River - July 30/31 - Tracking Thread
Thanks everyone. We had a crazy time. The heat and humidity were just relentless. I've never felt sick to my stomach for so long (we need a "pukey" smiley), basically from 3Pm until the finish. If someone ever tells you BR is an easy 100 miler, punch him/her in the face for me, will ya? An...

Re: Mohican 100
[quote="Maryka"... I guess the lesson from this one is that you can't rely on the aid stations to have what you want (or anything at all).[/quote] You're kind of right. When I go back, I won't expect much from the aid stations at Mohican. But let's be honest: I paid good money, it's an est...

Mohican 100
Congrats to Steve Beach, who finished the Mohican 100 last weekend in 29:10. The course was beautiful, but unbelievably hard, hot, humid and hilly. I DNF'd after 65 miles/21-ish hours. I just couldn't take it anymore. They had a new course this year and the winner finished in 22:10, compared with a ...

Re: Blisters
As long as they are not in the way and the liquid looks ok, it's a good idea to keep them (ie not to lance them). Keeps the new skin clean while it heals.

Re: Beast of Burden 100 Mile and 24hr winter ultra
Sounds good I might whip up a third pair of screw shoes just in case it gets wet ,might be nice to have dry shoes in the middle of the night. Definitely hoping for cold temps, makes this race seem alot more interesting, maybe a snow storm as well. Just please no rain! I changed my socks and base lay...

Re: Beast of Burden 100 Mile and 24hr winter ultra
In a race like this is it normal to wear microspikes, yak tracks or screw shoes or is that considered cheating? It doesn't say anything in the rules but it would seem pretty normal to me to have some kind of traction device depending on snow conditions. I mean, if it's that soft, fresh, deep snow, i...

Personally, after a trail ultra my muscles hurt. After a road ultra (I've actually only done Niagara), my joints hurt. I don't like it when my joints hurt.

Re: UltraMarathon Training and Racing a Marathon
Be careful though. After BQ'ing and signing up for Boston in 2009, I was training for it and decided to also run the 50 miler at Sulphur, using Boston as a training run. Then, after getting a taste for trails, I decided to run Seaton instead of Boston. I have now lost almost all my taste for road ra...

Re: Creemore 100 miler?!?
Had a blast last weekend. It was my first experience as a volunteer and it was an eye opening experience. I spent most of the night freezing my ass off even though I was wearing tons of layers and I was wrapped in a sleeping bag in front of a wood burning stove (which looked oddly out of place on th...

...For those of us sick and twisted and broke enough not to want to spend a fortune on gear and on running a 100 miler in the Arctic, our prayers are answered! Now there is a winter 100 closer to home that could potentially be colder than the weather was this year at that Alaskan 100 miler. ;) ... ...

WS100 Lottery
It's that time of the year: the Western States 100 lottery opened this morning. Chances to get in the race were 1 in 5 last year. Curious to know if others feel the siren song too, so I thought I would start a roll call of people throwing their hat in the ring. If my name is picked, I will have to t...

Re: Lava Salts, S Caps, endurolytes etc: What do you use and why
As Spaff mentioned, I like the Lava Salts. Quite frankly, I've never tried anything else because they work fine for me. I think. During the race, I took about 20 and went with a liquid diet of whatever sport drink they had at the aid station. I supplemented that with whatever "specialty" t...

Re: Haliburtons Anonymous (HA)
I bet almost everyone is freaking out about some kind of last minute injury. For me, it's some knee ache that came back after a nasty (or was it two?) fall in ITT. On another topic, I just got my Nathan Race vest this morning. One of the reason I've been running with my Hydration vest is all the nic...

I'm going all out this year: I'm staying in one of the cabins. Apparently, we have our own shower!
For those of you camping, don't forget to bring loonies for your post-race shower! You don't want to have to walk ALL the way to the restaurant to get change

Last year, I missed the Forest Shrine and couldn't leave my offering. I weighted heavy in my pocket all day. I paid a steep price later during the race. I will not miss it this time! Ignore at your own risk!!!
