Re: Your Favourite Winter Running Jacket
Ive used Saucony running pants for a few winters now, and they have treated me well. Even yesterday when it was below -30, I felt fine. Up top, I had an Adidas base layer, a Lululemon velocity mid-layer, a hoodie and a light Champion shell over all that. The hoodie and shell weren't really geared fo...

Re: October 2013 Training Goals
Just continue building my base after the 10k I completed this weekend. In the past, I've tended to fade away from running once I've achieved a goal I've been training for. My MAIN goal this month is to stay motivated!

Re: Race Handicap for a Challenge
I think my buddy is setting up a showdown between his wife and I. He keeps telling me at work that his wife is trash talking me, and plans to kick my ass in the 10k (I highly doubt that hes telling the truth!). She has done a half in just over 2 hours quite a while ago so she might be pretty close t...

Re: Forerunner 210--repair or replace
I have been using the Nike+ GPS watch for over a year now, and it has been great. Simple to use, simple to upload workouts and it doesn't overwhelm you with information. I have never used anything else. so cant comment on how it compares with other watches.

Re: Coming back to running (hopefully!)
I WAS in this boat in January. Was a struggle running 3k, and I couldnt believe I had done 10k races before. FWIW, it is amazing how quickly the body adapts. Stick with it!

Race Handicap for a Challenge
Not sure the title of the thread makes sense, but I'm looking for suggestions on how to make a 10k race slightly more interesting for my friend and I next month. He is a more experienced and faster runner than I am, but I was wondering if there is some sort of calculator out there that could suggest...

Re: Freeze spray?
Thanks for the input. Apparently he did it 3 weeks ago, and the bruising had almost gone away within a week. Then, he was fine to run on it, but the pain has returned in the last couple of days so he has rested and iced it. He plans to rest again today and go out for a run tomorrow to see how it fee...

Freeze spray?
A friend of mine is running in the QCM half this weekend, and he stubbed/sprained his big toe 3 weeks ago. Initially, he thought it was broken, but turns out its not. He can still feel it when he runs it though and I was wondering if there is some sort of spray/cream that he could use to numb the af...

Changing Lives 10k....with a surprise ending!
This was my 4th 10k race, and 1st of the year. I had never run the Changing Lives 10k before, but it seemed like the perfect race to keep me motivated and focused on training. The course was a modified version of my daily running route. It was 2 loops around Wascana Lake. The weather was ok, but it ...

Re: What limits 5k/10k speed?
For a 10k, the best workouts are really 6x1mi with 90s rest. It's not necessarily something you "start" with. As for why - a race is 6.2mi long. These rests will help you recover a bit to let you go at race pace or a little faster in training to get your body used to that zone. The best f...

Re:
I do think a little education on what workout works what energy system is valuable though, as I often find people doing workouts that are less productive or more likely to cause injury than neccessary. That is where slogging through a technical book like Daniels' Running Formula can be valuable eve...

Re: Run-commuting
Lesson learnt today - Do NOT leave swipe card in your jeans the previous day! I would have had to unpack my backpack to get at the swipe card out on the street. Luckily, my boss came to work at the same time and let me in.

Re: Run-commuting
First session of run-commuting done successfully. I was nervous the whole way through that I may have forgotten something, but so far so good. Have wallet, phone, swipe card, pants....its all good. The one thing I need to sort out is remembering what I put where in my back pack. So many little pocke...

Re: The runners wave?
I'll usually look at runners coming in my direction, and won't wave if they don't make eye contact or are running/talking in a group. If there is eye contact, I always wave/smile/nod. I find that the faster/fitter a runner is around here, the less likely they are to acknowledge you exist! I get more...

Re: Top 10 running fashion faux pas
With my current running gear, I don't think I could step out all in one brand even if I wanted to. My gear is a mish-mash of Saucony(shoes), Nike (most of my tech shirts), Adidas(most shorts), Puma (most socks), Oakley and an assortment of hats.

Re: Run-commuting
Picked up an Osprey back pack on the weekend. I've brought some toiletries and a towel to work. Will leave them here today. So, I'll just have to bring clean clothes, keys, wallet tomorrow.
It is not the backpack I was looking for, but it seems like it will do.

Re: Top 10 running fashion faux pas
Sometimes I see people running with their caps on backwards. To each their own, I guess, but it makes no sense to me! I have been guilty of running with shorts that are too long though. It is one of the last pieces of clothing that I bought for non-running related stuff that I began to use when I st...
