Re: What limits 5k/10k speed?
I think the biggest performance limiter for 5k and 10k is how much training time one diverts towards researching, over analyzing, onecdotalizing, and rebutalyzing conflicting research, analysis and anecdotes. Wow, running sure is complicated, the way you guys describe it.

Re: IMC 2011 Bib Numbers
Of course it's sarcastic, this whole thread is quite disturbing and disappointing to anyone who respects the integrity of the sport of Ironman Triathlon. Last Sunday 3000 triathletes climbed into Okanagan Lake hoping to be done swimming 3.8k by 9:20AM PST so they would be allowed to continue on to t...

Ah, I see. That makes sense, our roster was all messed up. Well hopefully our teams can battle it out in Whistler again next year.

Re: Haney to Harrison Relay- A nice sendoff
I was passing lots of people, including the bunny-eared team member. really? Your team finished 40 minutes back. You sure it was a rabbit you passed? Or maybe some other team picked up one of our extra sets of ears, I don't know how we would have passed and put 40 minutes on you in the last 2...

Re: Getting Goofy in Victoria
By Jeff's comment about banking a minute or two to account for an inevitable negative split-- that wasn't what lost me the time. :) I wasn't talking about you. I know all about why someone in the middle of the field loses 8 minutes on the last 10k, what I don't know is why the Kenyans (and Steve Os...

Re: Getting Goofy in Victoria
Well I think it's great that you've found a way to make marathon running challenging again. I don't know if you noticed, but looking at the results going back several years, it seems very rare that anyone runs a negative split on that course, even among the top 10 finishers. I'd be curious to ...

If I ever move to scenic Hamilton, it's a deal... But I stayed there for 2 weeks in 2003 and that was probably plenty to last a lifetime.

Re: racing before Boston
Comparing a sub 3 Marathon in Boston to ATB Gold, I'd say it would be pretty equal effort, both are major accomplishments. ATB might be slightly harder, I feel more intimidate thinking about running sub 2:00 at ATB then a sub 3 marathon. So doing both in the same year would be pretty cool wouldn't ...

Re: racing before Boston
To me, ATB sub 2 looks tougher than Boston sub 3. I felt much better running 4:26/km for 42 than I did doing 4:01 for 21 last month. Maybe in March/3 months into marathon training, 30k at 4:00 will seem less intimidating? The nice thing is, although I want to do well in Boston, it is the reward for...

Re: racing before Boston
That'd be a pretty cool double if you could pull a gold in ATB then a sub 3 in Boston.

Re: Racers this weekend! :)
Ian that is awesome! I saw your 10k split for the half and thought "uh oh!" but looks like you pulled it off. my training partner did a 3h01 12 min pb and iron heather/and mom smashed their 2h30 goal with a 2h12 in her first ever half. Look's like it was a good day to run and the weather c...

Re: Beer Mile
Reviving this old thread. I ran an impromptu beer mile yesterday, out of five races only three of us actually did the run. There were more spectators than runners by a factor of 3. My goal was "no penalty laps" and by that measure it was a success. It is really hard to drink when you are ...

Re: Swim training and 70.3
So what we've learned is that all opinions here aren't valid, and that as long as you're doing your thing and happy with that it doesn't matter how that might effect what others hope to achieve in their thing. You don't care about your swim, and it's not your problem if your not caring influences th...

Re: Swim training and 70.3
If you're not prepared to do that, then why devalue the process for those of us who do take it seriously who do put in the work? If you want to half-ass it, by all means, but is it really necessary to come on a forum and rub people's noses in it? How does it devalue your experience? I find this sta...

Re: Swim training and 70.3
There's this new sport for people who are too afraid or too lazy to swim. It's called "Duathlon". :P I don't think size5 said that she was 'afraid' and it's a wee bit out of line IMO to call someone lazy. Well to be fair, this seems to be a silly thread where someone who doesn't see...

Re: Who's in for the "GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon"
I still have a vested interest since my training partner is going for Sub 3 and MIL is running her first half. One of my riding partners is also going for a 1h35 half under my wing. I'm interested to see how it all pans out, but I won't be in Victoria at all that weekend.

Re: Who's in for the "GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon"
The trend lately seems to be 1 real nice (borderline hot) sunny day, then 5 straight days of rain, then repeating. The wierd thing is that normally the rain would be cold but it's still warm and humid out. Last Sunday was brutal for us, I layered up for a long run in the rain and 8k in I was dehydra...

Also, DNS for me, officially cancelled the trip today.

Re: Base building for triathletes?
my body usually starts around over 5 min k's, but I usually end up averaging around 4:40 k's. I just go by feel no matter what. No pace zones or anything. If I feel tired, I go slow, if I feel good, I pick it up a bit. Well that might be a good place to start. You should expect to feel good at the ...
