TED Talk: The Beirut International Marathon

This is a very interesting TEDTalk from the organizer of the marathon in Lebanon. She talks about her own experience, and bringing a marathon event to Beirut:

Re: Westward Wednesday

It's a beautiful day out there and I enjoyed a nice 5km run at lunch time. As ungrateful as this may sound, I'm thankful for the cooler weather at lunch time; it's so much more comfortable to run in 15C weather than 25C.

Re: Trying Tuesday

I went for a walk with a friend I haven't seen in a while. It was a nice hour-long traipse through the river valley, including two sets of stairs.

Re: Thrilling Thursday

It was indeed a thrilling Thursday for me, because I did my usual lunchtime run without my right knee hurting! It was cool and sunny, and you could smell a hint (just a hint) of fall in the air. Boo fall!

Thanks for this race-report! I hadn't heard of this race, but I'm hoping that this could be a really nice challenge next year.

My First Sinister 7!

Cross-posted from my running blog. I wrote this late last night and revisited this morning. I think I caught most of the rambling, but it's still a long report. I am elated to say that I have survived my first ultra-marathon! Ragnar and I went down to Crowsnest Pass and participated in the Sinister...

Re: Why does running make me want to &h!t so much????

Picture the scene: a young admin assistant clicks on the link to an older thread, thinking that she's had that problem too, and might find some commiseration. But the link is a bit old, so maybe she'll start with the last post (not remembering that it's usually at the end of these lists that the rea...

Re: Your Cooling Tricks?

My long runs never seem quite as hot as they did in Ontario, but I keep cool by wearing light colours, picking my time of day (lesson learned after nearly getting heat-stroke at noon on a long-run), planning my route around stopping for water refills in climate-controlled fast foot joints (I love Su...

Re: Spinach Shake

I tried a recipe like this for the first time on Remembrance Day 2012, banana included even though I dislike banana. Then I went to a Remembrance Day ceremony and spent half of it running to and from the bathroom (fortunately, it was the West Edmonton Mall ceremony!). I blamed it on the banana. Turn...

Re: How do you stick to your healthy eating habits?

I think the biggest aid for my continuous healthy eating habits is the way I shop for food. I do the outside-in method of shopping, where I hit the veggie/fruit section first (helpfully placed at the entrance of the store) so I fill my cart up with that, then proceed to meats, then dairy, and finall...

Re: Quiet Thursday ?

Despite my legs being sore from two days in a row of physical activity (I've been lazy!), I went out for a run at lunch today because it's just so nice out there. After about a kilometer, the ache faded and I enjoyed a very pleasant time in the warm sun. Runs like this are worth all the sore muscles...

Re: Tropical Wednesday

Went out for a beautiful run at work - 15C, a light breeze, the sun was shining, and I didn't have to stop once for a walk break! I am really glad I got out there today.

Which reminds me to e-mail the city and mention a cracked board on the Walterdale bridge sidewalk...

Re: Sunny Monday

Our regular lunchtime run was a bit slower because I kept having to take walk breaks because it's so warm out there, and I haven't acclimated yet!

Not that I'm complaining, mind - I'll take this over last Monday's weather any day.

Did a 5k in the river valley, trying to shake off some stress. The weather started off really cold but down next to the river, it was quite pleasant.

a third explosion is confirmed, but they're not saying if it's related. :/ At JFK in New York, no less. JFK library in Boston - not the airport. The FAA have closed airspace over the explosion site, perhaps that's part of the confusion. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-22160978 at 2120)

Re: Boston Marathon 2013

Someone on my FB list mentioned it might have been a gas explosion... but while I'd like to believe it was a horrible accident, I am suspicious because of the placement, timings between explosions, and day.

Do we have any more runners there?

A lunchtime ~5km under clear blue skies, but a cold wind that dropped -2C to -9C! I feel like my legs are in hibernation and I'm trying to haul them out. :(

My coworker and I equally dragged each other out to go for an admittedly short and almost-sweet run at lunch today. Neither of us really wanted to go but in the absence of wanting to be the one to kill the going out of a run, we ended up going. The worst of the run was the blowing-snow-inna-face. St...

I have been remiss in my running, but finally jumped back into my running shoes (rather than partake in a slightly-overwhelming work social event) today for a nice 5k in the sunshine.

While Mike Sobel is proud to advertise that tomorrow is Spring, I'm gonna go with the Onion's view on things.

Re: How cold is too cold?

I would not be running outside in Ontario's weather right now, that's for sure! Now that I'm back in Alberta, I find I don't mind running up to about -18C, depending on wind-chill. This is a far cry from my wimpy self last year where I couldn't bring myself to run outside in -5C. Still, I can't wait...
