Re: Self Supported Multi-day

Before my back injury I was geared up and training up for doing one or two night trips on 60+km trails in the Rockies. There are a lot of good trails to run.

Volunteers needed!

Hey all, The Sinister 7 Ultra + Relay in the Crowsnest Pass in Alberta is looking for volunteers for the aid stations and transition areas. If you are available the weekend of July 6-8, there are lots of volunteer spots available still. I ran this race the first year, but haven't been able to get ba...

Comfort is the most important factor in a running shoe

A researcher at the University of Calgary with a lot of years working on footwear and performance has this to say about all the fancy stuff going into running shoes. http://ucalgary.ca/news/utoday/january27-2011/shoefits?utm_source=UToday&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=january27-2011-shoefits

Hey Terry,

Is that a special rig you have taking the video? Digital camera or DVR? I've been thinking of getting something for my running and hiking.

Cheers,
Stuart

Re: 2011 Ultra roll call

Lots I would love to do, but my body just hasn't cooperated to make it happen in 2011. I will probably limit myself to doing 25K at Blackfoot and then take another crack at Lost Soul 53K in the fall. Plus I hope to do some fun runs on the trails in the mountains this year. If things continue to go w...

Sinister7 RM Relay Team

I'm going to start the buzz early on this one. I want to go back and run in Sinister7, but I'm not going to be up to a solo attempt by next summer. So here's the invite to my fellow Maniacs to join me in a great race. The race is July 9 & 10, and the registration opens December 1 @ 10am. Last ye...

Re: Pain during Ultras

After running my early races and training with Vitamin I, I won't reach for it unless I think it might be the different between being comfortable and severely uncomfortable. If I'm going to be on my feet for 8+ hours, then I might take one Vit I every four hours or so just to take the edge off so I ...

Re: Canadian Death Race

What a crock. I think the drug court will look for another race to relay. Ironman wasn't this hard to get into! There are certainly options. While Size5 and I would like to see RM relay teams at Ironhorse or Sinister7, I don't think we have our hearts set on it if we can get a team together. (At le...

Neat story. I like knowing people are being smart about wildlife encounters that have a human vs. animal conflict potential.

Re: Canadian Death Race

I had been thinking about doing CDR, but won't be doing this until I feel ready to solo. The cost is enough to cover the fees for at least two other races I want to do in Alberta this year.

Re: Ultras 2010

Signed up for the Fast Trax 100km Ultra today! This one has the potential to be a PR 100km race. 10 laps of a very flat 10km course. It is put on by Fast Trax Ski and Run Shop (http://www.fasttraxskishop.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). It was canceled last year, so am really lo...

Re: Ultras 2010

The one major factor for running CDR was that you earn points (3) that are necessary for entry to the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, which is a race on our wish list in the next couple of years. Wish being the operative word here. :sigh: If you want the points, just make sure you have a crew for the ai...

Re: Ultras 2010

I've never run CDR and DH & I were considering it for next summer, but the price and the amount of support/aid stations give the impression that you get little in return in comparison with a 100 miler. We're skipping it this year. Maybe in the future, who knows. It's cheaper for us to run 100s ...

Re: Ultras 2010

Don't forget there is the relay which would allow you to come out and see the course without running the entire 50 miles. Right now it is a 2 person relay with approx a 52k leg and a 31k leg, but I am toying with the idea of splitting the 52k leg into 2 and it would be about in the middle. If I do ...

Gear boy: Can you or someone give a brief on the Alberta ultras? We found a cheap condo (owned by the sister of a co-worker) in Canmore and ER Bunny and I would like to experience pain in Alberta. Re: Ultras 2010

My dislocated rib and associated back problems have seriously derailed my training this year. I was hoping to try the Alberta Triple in 2010, but that plan will have to wait for 2011 now. I know I'm not a huge presence on these forums, but I was wondering if any Alberta Maniacs would be interested i...

Re: Ultras 2010

That's quite a list Brian. I'll probably take another stab at the Frozen Ass Fifty in Calgary in February (nice supported LSD+) and if the FastTrax ultra gets the go-ahead for June 26, I might consider that (I'm curious about what a 50-miler would feel like on marathon training). FA50 is a nice fla...

Re: Coyotes kill Toronto singer in Cape Breton

The lesson here is to be ready for wildlife encounters whatever form they may take. On the dog side of thing I'm glad Ursa's breed is protective, calm and big. The breed book we got describes a Black Russian Terrier in California crushing the skulls of four coyotes that went after the sheep herd it ...

Re: what's a serious ultra-runner to do? remove their toenails!

I lost a record number five toenails this year. I had to change my shoes again this year. I tried a lot of shoes before settling on my Inov8's, but I had little choice in the end. The continuing struggle to find shoes that don't kill my toes will no doubt continue for a long time, and it has had me ...
