Re: Steamy Thursday
Air quality is back down to "low risk" all over the local area-- only Whistler still has bad air. It does tend to get a bit worse here over the course of the day (just like most late summer days), so I ran this morning. 5K today. 8) Where are you looking? Not all over the local area... Ai...

Re: Will the Rain Ever End Tuesday?
Enough with the rain already! No bike commute today because it was pouring (though it's stopped now, of course). More hills on the bike tonight! :) Send the rain this way, please. http://globalnews.ca/news/2055240/forest-fire-burning-north-of-squamish-in-the-elaho-valley/?hootPostID=3e99dc14...

Re: Howdy old friends, quick Vancouver run Sunday?
Re the lockers, I was curious, so I asked Translink. This is the reply: Not that I am aware of, there used to be some at the Greyhound bus depot at Main St Stn, but I believe those are gone now. I've been in and out and around in Waterfront Station a fair bit and have never seen any lockers or sign ...

Re: New to Ultra Running
Well after running numerous half marathons and full marathons I have decided to make the jump to a 50K ultra marathon. I will be running the Lost Soul Ultra marathon in Lethbridge in September. Any advice for a new to ultra runner? Any advice from anyone who has run the Lost Souls. Thanks for any h...

Re: It's a New Year Thursday
It's a new year, and I don't post here much, but I still poke around from time to time, so I thought I'd say hello and happy 2015 to you all! I'm just back from celebrating by spending 2 nights in the back country. Total of around 10 hours of hiking and snowshoeing. Perfect way to kick off the year....

Re: Running in Stanley Park
Thanks again for the suggestions everyone. I was in Vancouver there at the beginning of the week for the conference. I had a chance to wander (walking) around Stanley Park for the afternoon on Sunday after I arrived. The park is beautiful. I weather was great and I loved how everyone was out with t...

Re: Routes from downtown Montreal
Ian covered Mont Royal... I second the recommendation. The road is actually an old tramway, so it really is not steep. If you're feeling a smidge more adventurous, pop into some of the smaller trails you see along the way. Some very pretty spots. Another great option is to head to the water. There's...

Re: Lower incidence of diabetes in "Walkable" neighbourhoods
I get worked up over this topic because urban vs suburban is the current class 'war' in urban planning circles and its unfortunately a topic loaded with judgment and smug attitudes. Vancouver does the smartest thing I know which is elect councillors at-large rather than by ward, in most other citie...

Re: Lower incidence of diabetes in "Walkable" neighbourhoods
Interesting... I moved from an 80/62/74 (with rail, bus, metro, car share, and bike share) to a 92/59, then to a 98/60, with bus and car share (I guess they don't count the 13 minute walk to the Seabus). My current 'hood doesn't have a bike score. I say it's because only crazy people want to bike up...

Re: Lower incidence of diabetes in "Walkable" neighbourhoods
Speaking of definitions of walkability: http://globalnews.ca/news/1406594/vancouver-canadas-most-walkable-city/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Hm. Interesting, how the infograohic highlights ski slopes, biking and such as part of healthy living. Yes, sure, but that's confusing issues...

Re: Lower incidence of diabetes in "Walkable" neighbourhoods
I hope this isn't really a surprise to anyone. But, as always, the chicken or egg question remains. Are the people in walkable neighbourhoods those who sought out a walkabkle 'hood because they are are already predisposed to such a lifestyle, already eating healthily, walking, and so on? Or do well-...

Huh. I didn't know Hoka was owned by the same company that owns Ugg and Teva. I guess they're all about the, um... less attractive footwear. I have a few friends who run in Altras and quite like them. As Jim said... whatever works for you! Re: Running in Stanley Park
You should, indeed, see Stanley Park! There WAS a sexual assault there last week, at about 8:30am, near Lost Lagoon. As far as I know, the suspect has not yet been found, though a sketch of him was released. As unfair as it is, I'd say men likely have a bit less to worry about, but it's always good ...

Re: A funny thing - being a runner and travelling
Lucca is beautiful. Wish I could have spent more time there. Enjoy! It is, indeed. I leave on Friday and I had grand plans of a day trip to Siena or Florence tomorrow, but there's still much to see here, so I think I'll likely just hang out here. I'm content, I can rest, etc. etc. I don't really fe...

Re: A funny thing - being a runner and travelling
And now, I'll go explore Lucca in the sunshine. :) Going for a run? Ha ha. Nope. Was exploring the old city centre, which is not conducive to running. I did walk half way around the wall, and I'll run there tomorrow or the next day. (It's only about 4km, though, so I'll likely explore a bit outside...

A funny thing - being a runner and travelling
Yesterday evening, I landed in Pisa, took a bus to Pisa Centrale train station, and got on a train to Lucca. I was feeling a little bit tense. It had been a long day since I had left my friends in Derby, early in the morning. My accommodations here in Lucca were a little uncertain. It was getting da...

Re: Irish Sunday
I decided to take advantage of the time difference and start the daily thread. Out for a short, easy run today in preparation for tomorrow's Belfast Marathon. Hey! I'm in Ireland, too! But I'm hanging in Dublin, and though I did get a 6km run in, our "marathons" have been more of the park...

Nice. Glad no one got hurt. Based on your photos, I don't understand why the camera on the Moto X has been panned in most reviews. They're beautiful. Funny you should mention that. When I first started looking at phones, that's what I had read, too. Then, after I'd narrowed it down to this on...

Grand Canyon Rim-to-Not-quite-rim-to-Rim
On Easter weekend, a group of 14 of us from North Van and Calgary headed down to Arizona for a night in Sedona, 2 nights in the Grand Canyon, and a night in Vegas to top it off. I haven't done much worth sharing here lately (the odd half marathon, a bunch of trail runs, bla bla...), but I thought I'...

Re: West Highland Way and/or other UK/Ireland running advent
Hey Heather, checkout Ramblers , they help organize sag service for walking tours. I would think you could incorporate a running tour this way. Also look at Coast to Coast Walk . A co-worker is heading out next week to do this. However this is in the north of England and likely 4 or so hours south ...
