Re: How bagged should I be at the end of my long runs?
This is probably going to sound a bit odd, but it may be worth a try. One trick I use is to exhale on every 5th step: exhale-2-3-4-5-exhale-2-3... This serves 2 purposes; it stops me from running too fast and helps me to keep my turnover high.

Re: Longest training plan
Are you going to try that schedule I posted? I'm running 5x/week, my SIL only 3x/week. The only change we made is that any run over 150 minutes is limited to 150 minutes. Due to past and on-going foot problems, she doesn't want to run any longer than that, which is what limits her to the half-marath...

Re: Longest training plan
Jim, interesting plan. Do you vary the type of runs, or just go on the basic, tempo, long run. How do you gage your time for the race day? I assume it would be run by perceived exertion? Thanks I convinced my SIL that the important thing for her is to build up the distance first. As I said, there w...

Re: Longest training plan
Here is a simple 26-week marathon plan based strictly on time. I know you're not a novice and are planning on a half-marathon, but you could always follow this and make your longest runs 150 minutes (2.5 hours). If you had started last week, this would end on March 2nd. ( I know because my SIL is ho...

Re: MEC races
They held an event in June at which the 5K was manually-timed, but the longer events were chip-timed. At the event in July, all were manually-timed. They may have decided chips were too expensive. Ah OK, maybe that's where I got the idea they were chipped. By manual, you mean that machine where the...

40 minutes this morning. These cooler mornings are soooooo much better for running. Mind you, I have a much longer run coming up this evening.

Re: Trying Tuesday
It goes down to 8-9C overnight here... Pretty nice for running in the mornings, actually. Oh, how I wish it was like that here. Last week was great because it was going down to around 14ºC overnight; perfect for morning runs. This week, too warm and humid for my liking, but got it done anyway. It's...

Ran for an hour at about 6:15 this morning. Not happy that the humidity is back - thankfully, nothing like last month - but otherwise it wasn't bad at all.

Holly, I think RoadRaceResults should be listed under "Event Calendars". They have the most complete listing of races for Ontario; they aren't tied to a specific timing company and try to list all the road & trail races they can find in the province.

La: You can sometimes find celeriac at the local part of St. Lawrence Market and I think I've seen it at Cargo, the fruit and vegetable market near the corner of Queen & Lee.

Re: Mantova investigation leads to formal charges
There's a simple way to stop it in all sports. Teams/sponsors should have it written into the contract that if a player is caught using a banned substance, the contract is voided and the athlete must reimburse the money already paid.

Cut our run down from 60 minutes to 50. Can't really call it a run: this morning was a jog.
(Yes, I will use that word. In this case, it's appropriate. )

I saw a post on Chef Tyler Florence's Twitter feed about the best mashed potatoes: Yukon gold potatoes A couple of cloves of garlic, peeled Simmered in cream & butter! From the photo, it looked like the pot was pretty full of potatoes, so I think you'd put the cut up potatoes in the pot...

I was a bit taken aback to hear a run clinic group leader detailing the hill workout that was on tap for the group- it just seemed irresponsible. I mean maybe if you're a high level, experienced runner who is specifically looking for the benefit of heat training, maybe... but these people were defi...

I haven't in ages, but used to when I worked at Queen's University. Mind you, the run was only 4.5K each way and I could use the showers at the Phys.Ed. Centre. Have fun.
