Re: Habs Did the Distance

I don't have anything witty to add here, just congratulations and well done! I've said before how I'm in awe of your consistency and drive and this race just confirms what I already knew. Can't resist though... never say never... ;)

Re: Do your race times mean a lot to you?

Generally, in terms of objective measurement, I'm much more interested in placement than times, age group placement particularly. I much prefer racing to time-trialing and have had some of my most satisfying race experiences in racing other people like with James at ATB and Jamie at Kingston. I have...

Re: Brent Run Canoe Race

What an incredible experience! Congratulations on completing the course, in 40hrs(!) - I bet you'll forget your time though, well before you forget how good a time you had. I'd love to have a go at something like that one day.

Excellent report of an excellent race. The mental side, and it's associated rewards is so much more important than numbers on a clock.

Way to tough it out, that's a heck of a race completed in full-on, gut-it-out manner. Congrats.

Nice and very worthy idea - if not very original - but poorly executed I thought. Many of the pictures are awkward rather than inspiring. Too bad, could have been a great piece.

Re: Duathletes - A place to voice

Sorry I didn't meant to make it sound that way, trix. I'm a pretty slow swimmer too. What I meant was that jono's comment didn't really bother me but Mark's did because I thought it was harsh to someone who can do a 4K open swim in "only" 90 minutes a "non-swimmer". But I can se...

welcome to RM! I can't help you with your question because I'm too slow and a slacker! Robbie-T would be a good one to ask though. 6/10 for the obvious back door brag. Re: Strava

Strava is my preferred w/o logging site, particularly for cycling. It's okay too for running but not so good for swimming. I really like the competitive element, and have a few KOM's in a few different countries. It adds an extra element for me but I guess that's not for everyone. The KOM concept is...

Re: Sports Drinks - useless or worse? (TV alert: Marketplace

The facts don't matter, anecdotes do: got it! But on a personal level, that's actually true. As a non-competitive, recreational runner what matters to me is my experience... what works for me? The experts can talk all day about optimum this and the "right" amount of that, but I know what ...

Re: Sports Drinks - useless or worse? (TV alert: Marketplace

They need to do a double-blind fully controlled experiment to find out, of course. We can't go on anecdote or personal experience here, it's too important. Seriously, I think it is personal and very much controlled by individual perception as much as any physiological elements. Real experts, ...

Re: Sports Drinks - useless or worse? (TV alert: Marketplace

I was thinking that the need for electrolyte replacement, and absorption of sugar and electrolytes is individualized. For example, in my biking group, we have a gal who can go ~ 100 K without anything other than water, and on the other hand, we have a man in the same group, who needs to eat/drink e...

Re: Sports Drinks - useless or worse? (TV alert: Marketplace

Your experiments maybe a good example of what happens in a long training session, but a poor experiment. What is a "bonk"? Is is running low on glycogen, getting tired, getting dehydrated, getting hot, upsetting your electrolyte balance or some blend? You are naming it and "testing&q...

Re: Sports Drinks - useless or worse? (TV alert: Marketplace

I once did an experiment; I rode my bike hard, on a hot day, with my only intake being water, to see what a bonk felt like. It took 4h20 and ~140km to bonk and it was spectacular. I learned two things that day; what it feels like to bonk and I can go a long way/time without needing sugar. I've done...
