Re: Information on cooking oils?
Actually, according to the table in Wikipedia, coconut oil has a lower smoke point than most other oils. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooking_oil" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I think that's just for the extra-virgin: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoke_point" onclick="window.open(t...

Re: Information on cooking oils?
My understanding is that a plant-based saturated fat is not damaging to the body the way animal-based saturated fat can be, which is why coconut oil is not a health risk when used in moderation. This is my understanding as well. And it is all about moderation, you will hear/read that people are sla...

Re: I'm doing it - Try a Tri
I have a pretty decent mountain bike that is in great shape, so it looks like I will be okay. And here I was looking to get a new bike and you guys just squashed the story I was going to give my husband  . Now to look into wetsuits! I will be starting my swim training in a lake in one month, ...

Has anyone got any shipping info? It usually would have shipped by now. Since it has not I feel like I should have not done this.... Do you ever order things online? Shipping is usually 24-36 hours... if it was as big a sale as it seemed (as in the promo being shared) then they probably have a larg...

Re: Compression sock bruising?
I agree that folding them is probably the issue.
Unfortunately with a knit, cutting it off is only going to cause more problems as there is no finish and they will run/unravel. Is there a way you can not pull them up quite so high without compromising how the sock sits on the rest of your leg?

Re: Buying your performance on the bike!!
To me it sounds ridiculous that you would have an aero helmet but not clipless pedals, but whatever Dang... ya beat me to it... And... fwiw, there has been a fair bit of wind tunnel research that proves you get just as much gain from an aero helmet as you do from race wheels... for about 10% of the...

Re: Going price for a used Garmin 305?
I agree with ngcaper and orleansrunner. My 305 has been a workhorse, it's survived the washing machine and the lake and all sorts of stuff on the bike. The bike mount and the wrist strap ROCK. When it dies I want another 305 and I still don't understand why they discontinued it. I have a 305 as wel...

Re: Buying a Bike
With F.I.S.T. all of the angles are measured on a specific fit bike, and can be done for both tri and road (some major fit differences). Those angles and measurements are then translated to several bike options (along with the size you need) that fit those measurements. As many manufacturers are als...

Re: Buying a Bike
second on getting fit. If you can, find someone who is F.I.S.T. certified. It may cost $200, but they should give you several options/brands of bikes, and will apply the cost of the fit to a bike you buy from the shop. That's what we do anyhow. Get yourself a nice entry level (at least) road bike. F...

Developing an appreciation for the classics...
As much as I am surrounded (for 8-16 hours a week) by a bunch of shiny (or matte finish) paint jobs, race wheels and carbon, I have developed a great appreciation for "more mature" road bikes. Our bike mechanic is an avid collector. He has a couple of bikes dating back to the late 1800's, ...

Mirin is a sweet rice wine.. kind of like saki, but with very minimal alcohol content. You'll find it with the vinegars.

Re: Ocean Triathalons dealing with swallowing saltwater
I have one done ocean swim race. I managed to get to the location a day or two before hand and was able to do a bit of open water swim practice which definitely helped. Make sure you get a good feel for breathing to one side only, just in case of waves. Biggest tip I have: place a hard candy (Jolly ...

Maybe I am cynical in my old age. Nothing an athlete (or 'celebrity')does surprises me anymore. I just read that country singer Mindy McCready killed herself this weekend. This is sad, but once again a case of someone great at something, but flawed as a human being like the rest of us. They ...

Another for the Saris Bones. Fantastic "rack" (snicker, snicker). I got rear-ended with my mountain bike on that rack, the rack took the brunt of the accident (lower speed) and while one of the legs on the rack snapped, the only thing damaged on my bike was the wheel, and my car had a dent...

Baked Turkey Scallopini with Panko breadcrumbs. Here's a low-cal version of a schnitzel-type main course. I used turkey breast that had been thinly sliced/pounded (bought it that way, but you could do it yourself). You could use any type of meat you have or like (pork, veal, turkey, chicken). Prehe...

I've spoken to a few people who have not followed this saga as closely as many of the people on RM and what I've found interesting is that for the most part their response is..."so he cheated...big deal...leave the guy alone" The problem is he didn't just cheat. He hurt so many people in ...

Re: Report: Lance considering confession
I saw very little humility in the 20 minutes or so I could actually stomach. Blame transfer: a lot of "we"... who the heck is "we"??? Insincerity: Emma Watson deserves way more than "I owe her an apology" And probably a lot more in the 40 minutes I couldn't bother with.

Did you guys know in Clermont you are allowed to use a snorkel on the swim. Can I ask why you would use a snorkel? You will swim slower than without. Limiting your breathing through a snorkel is hypoxic at anything beyond a very easy effort. +1 +2 And if you want to place in your age category, the ...
