Re: Bike stolen at the "The Canadian" in Ottawa

After a couple of meetings we are anticipating setting up a system where we video tape the only two possible entrances and exits to our transition area. Because we all know that thieves won't go to the effort of lifting a featherweight bike over a fence if they want to steal it. Let me know your id...

Re: David Veilleux announces his retirement

He won races so he's as suspect as anyone if you're going to use the "can't win without doping" line. You don't hear of too many sportsmen having much intellectual aptitude and those that do tend to be the few who walk away if there is that option. Tony Sandoval and Bob Kempainien both won...

Re: David Veilleux announces his retirement

I was merely pointing out that his win at 41 looked insanely suspicious. If you already accept the premise that doping can cause health problems (most would) and you then see that you still have to dope to get to the top level of the sport, then it stands to reason you might retire rather than risk...

Meaning that there is no evidence that Horner's body is messed up, doping or not.

Re: David Veilleux announces his retirement

I'm not sure how a 41 year old winning a big race shows a youngster that he's going to "mess up his body". It seems like the opposite is true.

Re: Speedwork the Ed Whitlock way

Ed has a far higher level of natural speed than the average runner. He can afford to let that go a bit. The average runner often can't get going much faster than 5k pace in an all out sprint. It's important to realize that Ed was originally talking about not doing speedwork for running middle distan...

Re: Mo vs. Bolt

I'll be surprised if Bolt follows through on this because it is a significant departure from his typical training, even taking into account his relative comfort with 400m. Nevertheless, the near-consensus that Mo will run him down by about 500m sounds about right to me. This has the potential to be...

Re: The Wellington Mile

Not a great idea to have kids on the front row if you have the option. Every race already has the scenario where kids sprint out and then slow down and clog the course.
The MacPass mile had a situation where the kids were trampling each other in their own separate race.

Uphill cycling is about weight as well. Moderate dehydration helps in every scenario.

Re: Spit or Swallow? Your sports drink, that is ;)

Training in accepted manners is also no guarantee that performances will get better in a race scenario, Many people do better training and fail to improve in races.
Several well known athletes haven't seen a PB in years despite the best training and coaching available.

Re: Sprinter doping scandal widens

It's a bit different than taking a cold medication which wasn't intended for performance. Silken Laumann (and her team doctor) should have known better-- it was a careless mistake (apprarently the doctor told her to take "Benadryl" not realizing that some Benadryl preparations contain pse...

Re: Sprinter doping scandal widens

I remember Silken Laumann having trouble reading labels on cold medication and cross referencing them with the banned substances list.... or blaming someone else for that.
That incident was very quickly forgotten.

Shorten that brake cable housing to the rear brake to give the cable a straighter run to the brake.

Breathing should be more of a random pattern unless you are a totally one pace all the time runner.
If you are worried about things that require you to think about them too much, then avoiding locating studies like this will lessen the complications involved in such a simple task.

Re: replacing tires + tubes

The rubber on a tire does virtually nothing to hold the tire itself together. The fabric inside the rubber does that job. Modern tires can be ridden for much longer than people generally use them.

Re: Running off the bike

As another newbie triathlete I have to say this is easier than I thought it would be. I do this once or twice per week (either outside or at the gym) because in general I find it easier to do back-to-back workouts than two separate workouts, so it allows me to do more running in a week. I've done u...

Re: I'm doing it - Try a Tri

Pros apparently now run on wider tires than in the past. The thought that skinny high pressure tires are going to be that much faster is likely based on perfect conditions like new asphalt or a velodrome. Skinny tires are like a bike that is incredibly stiff for power transfer but so uncomfortable t...

Every animal that makes its living by running does that one basic stretch. It's when people and animals get all '"tame" that they start thinking they have to spend large amounts of time contorting themselves. Like this guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlmonzHPSz8" onclick="window.open(t...

It is a very brief routine but a lion always limbers up before hunting. Some deep breathing exercises and a light stretch.

Sounds like sesamoiditis. Many people don't realize that we have what amounts to a mini patella under the ball of our foot and it's pretty easy to irritate it.
