Re: Racing Heart Rate

I used to wear the heart rate strap and often went over 200 (according to the device) in the finishing straight of my races. As a 39 year old the formulas say my max is in the 180s. I don't wear the strap any more as I don't train by heart rate and the data was just not the interesting/useful to me.

Re: Ten best things about Avis' 10k

Sounds like a great race. I too end up racing a "guy in white" or whatever. It's easy to get stuck behind someone and then lulled into their pace. Best to just tick them off as you blast past them. That fast last km should give you a lot of confidence that you can pick it up earlier in the...

Re: Tips for keeping pace in check ?

How does that 5:20 pace feel? Could you carry on a normal conversation at that pace without huffing and puffing or breaking up words? If so then that pace is likely your easy pace. If not then you need to slow it down and it just comes down to discipline and watching your garmin (do you have one?). ...

Re: PB Story

I notice some were drinking from cans, some bottles. I find it easier to drink faster from a can so Pat's race is even more impressive from my standpoint.

Did you have rules for %alc content and volume or was it pretty lax on that score?

Re: Crappy weather = no Sunday thread?

Great race in the pouring rain today in Barrie. Finished in 1:44:56 which was good enough for a 3rd page age group finish and a 14th place finish for females and 83/495 overall. This is about a 3 minute PB for me as well. Very happy with this result. Ran a 4:56/km pace for 16K then dropped to 4:57/...

I run past rivers, streams, fountains, beach showers, kids water parks etc and soak my cap or buff and put it back on my head. Feels heavenly on a really hot day.

Re: mas_runner at the Ottawa Marathon

This is weird. Last year in Victoria I also had an 11 min PB, within a minute of your time, with pretty much identical strategy and splits but with more leg buckling. It's like I have an Ottawa doppelganger. Congratulations on your success! That IS odd! How do you feel about your strategy, do...

Re: mas_runner at the Ottawa Marathon

great report! congratulations again. How did your friends do? One came it at 4:43 the other at 4:45 (extra pottie stop  ). Both were very happy! It's hard to say whether starting at 3:45 pace would have allowed you to keep a consistent pace the whole time. I wish there was some way to do that ...

mas_runner at the Ottawa Marathon

PRE-RACE I got up early and picked up two out-of-towners; friends of a friend of mine who were both attempting their first marathon. We had a good chat on the way in to town and I tried to help them with my local knowledge of the course and where to go and what to expect. I left out what it feels t...

Re: How Realistic is a Marathon Negative Split?

This is a very interesting discussion and pertinent to me. 9 minute positive split on Sunday (1:47/1:56). I have only run 2 marathons so don't have very much experience at all and earmarked 3:45 to be my goal (calculators for my HM put me at 3:35). I decided to test just how good my endurance was b...

Re: 2013 Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend:Pace Bunny Team Report

I was under pace for the first km or 2 (due to congestion early on) then worked my way down to the target pace by about 4km, and held steady the rest of the way. I wanted to run it at 5:03/km, which is a bit under 3:35 pace, but I figured that you never get all the tangents right, so if I stuck rig...
