Re: Bike fit and back pain

Slightly increased flexibility through holding that position and likely also blood flow changes. An increase in capillarization seems feasible. There are a number of other examples that could be given where a pewrson can do an activity that initially causes a good deal of ischemic pain that rapidly ...

Re: Bike fit and back pain

A state of prolonged contraction or stretching naturally limits blood flow because you immediately lose the peripheral pump effect of an alternately contracting and relaxing muscle. Try squatting down and staying there for hours and you will quickly have numb feet and sore knees no matter how strong...

Re: Bike fit and back pain

I disagree with the core strength issue. Many cyclists with the upper body strength of a jellyfish put in hours on the bike with no problems. I think blood flow issues through the lower back is the primary cause of the lower back pain felt by new cyclists. Eventually it goes away and there will be z...

Re: Inventor of the treadmill dies

A 'brisk" 8 minute mile will do far more for the all around fitness level of the average person than half an hour of slogging 10-11 minute miles.
Health fitness and race fitness are two different things.

Re: Beer Mile going mainstream?

I also have to say that I've always been worried about going to one- bringing and drinking lots of beer to a public park never seemed like a good idea to me, not just for the illegality of it. Ah Vancouver. Where a beer mile would get the po-po with tasers but a "big bowl of weed" mile wo...

Re: Oscar Pistorius to Compete in London 2012!

People always talk about the theory of an exceptional runner losing limbs so a direct comparison of ability can be made.
This guy may answer that.

I've never been able to figure out how people are unable to accumulate their race distance in weekly mileage yet expect to safely put it all together in just a few hours.

Re: cbc.ca Article on Jerome Drayton

There is a big difference betwen recreational running and logging between 100 and 200 miles per week for a decade or so and racing dozens of races at sub five minute pace or better. Running may be good for your knees but the overdoing it that elite athletes have to commit to isn't. Arthritis probabl...

Re: A question for the experts

It's easier to put in a max effort over 21.1 as opposed to a 2k? Not true at all. I said the other way around, at least for me. And by "easier" I meant pacing-wise, not effort wise. The longer it goes for me the harder to pace it so at the end I've got nothing left. My mistake with the re...

Re: A question for the experts

The calculators give one a ball park but there would seem to be a number of interactive factors as it applies to the individual. How many kilometers was the person running when they ran a 5K. Did they burst a lung and puke crossing the finish line and could not take another step or was it a comfort...

Re: Bear on the loose in Kanata!

You load the bear into a cage of sorts, drive it to a more suitable location and open the door. Graduate students around the world tranquilize large animals routinely and let them wake up on their own. There is no dealing with them as they wake up. Sure it's not like a person waking up from surgery ...

"Bear technician". That sounds like something that requires a lengthy education.
The police are not trained to use a tranquilizer gun? Load gun, point at large animal, pull trigger. A kid that plays paintball could do it.

Re: Unusual increase in E-pace after incline/horizontal repe

Basic running doesn't do much to recruit muscle use. Running up a long hill forces you to use your leg muscles and warms them up properly.

Not sure why a reality check is a bad thing. We really don't know if she truly believed that she magically became a 22 minute 5km runner but she sucked a few random people into believing that.

Re: Sporting Life

Something wrong with the chip timing/wave start. The large number of huge positive splits tells that. Quite a few WR 's set in the first 5km.
