Re: Boston Dad may have some explaining to do to his son
Well without going down the slippery slope argument-I would say that if nothing is done to close the timing loophole, it won't be too long before people start seeking out the races with courses that are easy to cheat in order to get their BQs. Why would that start happening? Most marathons have alw...

Re: Gatineau Park & Ottawa area trail runs - Add yours!
I think the big triangular route around Lac Philippe (51/53/52/50) is indeed what you're looking for. If I recall correctly, it's just a bit over 20km. Lots of nice shade, no hills longer than a minute, really nice running surfaces. There are some low-lying spots along 52 where the bugs can be reall...

Re: Timeless Running
Just my opinion, but I think the overall goal of the race dictates whether using a watch is valuable or not. If I were just really going for it and trying to run my best possible race, then for sure I'd go without (or ignore) a watch. You react to your body's feedback and knowledge of your own fitne...

Re: Speed, or endurance what's more beneficial to focus on?
Agree with the comments already, and just would add that it is also much easier to get fast quickly than increase endurance quickly. If you put together many, many months of long slow jogging now, you can usually ramp up your speed quickly by focusing on that in just the last month or two before you...

Re: Fall 2014
I'm going to take advantage of the bunch of new no frills races in the Ottawa area this fall. MEC has a 15km in September ($15) and their half marathon in Gatineau Park in November ($20). There's a new running series put on by (or in conjuction with, I don't know) the Neat Cafe in Burnstown. A 10 mi...

Re: Boston Marathon Fixed?
I do think a marathon would be very easy to fix... a field of athletes who make a lot more money from appearance fees/endorsements/connections than actual performance prizes, the ability to make it look like you're competing without really competing (holding back by 3 or 4 seconds per kilometre), an...

Re: New(ish) to running
A lot of what you might see in training programs referring to "interval training" is very different from the run/walk intervals you might be using in the early stages of your running lifestyle. Interval training in the most popular sense is an intermediate-to-advanced workout that is used ...

Re: Around the Bay 2014
It'll be interesting to see how they resolve this. There's no way they could spend a couple hundred thousand dollars (and hundreds of man-hours) shipping shirts individually. It'd be a really good traffic generating partnership for someone like The Running Room to distribute the shirts locally, but ...

I really like that they include the somewhat overlooked 15km distance.

Re: Raw Juice Cleanses
People talk all the time about limiting processed foods, but juicing is a form of processing-- you're changing the fundamental nature of the food. It doesn't help too much if you feel like you aren't getting enough fruits and veggies in your diet to fool yourself into thinking you're getting most o...

Re: Raw Juice Cleanses
I would respectfully contend that juicers are in no way your friend. The problem with juice is it not only superconcentrates the sugars of nature's original item, it (ironically) also deprives you of water that helps you feel full. Anyone with a juicer will attest to the goopy (that is... watery) me...

More female world record attempts = more uteruses falling out on the road.

The facts don't matter, anecdotes do: got it! But on a personal level, that's actually true. As a non-competitive, recreational runner what matters to me is my experience... what works for me? The experts can talk all day about optimum this and the "right" amount of that, but I know what ...

I mostly listen podcasts while running. Lots of mindless sports ones (Bill Simmons, etc) because they're not too distracting and if I zone out I won't really be missing anything important. I can't listen to my favourite podcasts while running... with This American Life there's too high a chance of h...

Re: Chicago goes Lottery
Interesting. I still think it would be better for the sport to have these races drastically increase the registration fee (>$400) rather than use a lottery to thin the herd , but delay registration until a three or four months before the race. Are you nuts?! Better for the sport, how? So that the r...
