Re: Chicago goes Lottery
Interesting. I still think it would be better for the sport to have these races drastically increase the registration fee (>$400) rather than use a lottery to thin the herd, but delay registration until a three or four months before the race.

Re: Situps or pushups
I would think that for distance running, the answer would be neither. Strong chest and triceps from pushups are not useful for running (and may detract due to added weight). For strengthening core, an isometric exercise like planks would be more appropriate for the demands of running, without the ri...

And if they're to far Gatineau is as nice as anywhere in the world to run in...and I'm not from here and travel a tonne so it says alot. Just camp up near Lac Phillips or Taylor. You can run for 100's of km just there. I agree 100%. For anyone outside the Ottawa area, Gatineau Park should be at the...

Re: Trail Running Getaway . . .
Lake Placid will be a great choice. I'm planning a summer trip there as well. Another option for another time would be the northern periphery of the GTA. Albion Hills Conservation Area (lots of campsites here), Terra Cotta/Silver Springs, Forks of The Credit Provincial Park... that's a full long wee...

An hour and a half of snowshoeing at Calabogie. That trail definitely hadn't been used yet this year... even with snowshoes on we were sinking knee deep (waist deep in spots). What a workout.

NMG...come join any weekend. The Gatz are fun...much better than the doldrums of the road. I consider the road barely a step up from the TM. dgrant...I have no idea where that area is, but am now interested. Could I get a good hr of running, snowshoes and no snowshoes there? I snowshoed (snowshod?) trails 64 and 65 out of Relais Plein Air yesterday. They are super accessible and have enough ups and downs to give you a really good hourish-long workout.

Nobody?
The broad, hive mentality "nobody". Like nobody drinks Fanta. Nobody believes Peyton Manning can win the Superbowl.

So how much longer until the "secondary market" for some of these races is controlled by opportunistic scalpers? (Specifically, buying one or more bibs with no intent to run and then reselling above purchase price.) I don't know anything about concert ticket scalping, but in sports the wh...

Re: On the topic of Selling/Buying Race Bibs ...
Yes, that would have the effect of having people sign up well in advance, but that's actually better for the RDs. It sucks for people who want to secure their spot, though. Do we know that to be true, or might it have the opposite effect? If people know there are later (and official) opportunities ...

Re: On the topic of Selling/Buying Race Bibs ...
Race directors are members of the running community, and should really feel an obligation to allow and actively aid in the transfer of entries. It's bad for the sport/hobby to have people showing up at the start line (or completing the final stages of training) when they ought not due to injury, si...

Interesting article on emerging injury treatments
Here's an interesting article on new devices and treatments being used by athletic trainers in the NBA. Obviously in pro basketball money is no object, but some of these things are pretty interesting... inflatable massage boots, reduced gravity treadmills, cryochambers, etc.

Re: Kenyans chase and catch cheetahs
Interesting that they elected to catch them live rather than kill them. Are cheetahs protected/endangered? Is their market value more alive than dead? I wonder if one day soon there will be an adventure-tourism market for rich endurance enthusiasts to head to Africa to chase down gazelles for sport....

Re: Recent injury need new shoes please help
Good luck with your shoe shopping and continued running. Two observations: 1. I wouldn't say what you're describing is a common running injury, and I definitely wouldn't count on a shoe (any shoe) solving that for you. You'll hear anecdotes though about people suffering painful inflammation in the f...

Re: Greg McMillan's GPS rules
I definitely agree with #1. Often I'll glanced down at my watch at the beginning of a run and the pace is very slow, and I just ignore it. I then let my body ease into the pace. I agree as well, and I think I've come to realize it's also why I often find treadmill runs harder than outdoor runs. Goi...
