Been there, done that and have a t-shirt with regards to "losing" the mental edge - and that is been without injury. Doing something different may not only refresh, it could open a new door to training. I get bored if I stay with an approach for two long so I will try new things. Last week, run over...

Some food for thought about how to do intervals according to the research: http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/0145.htm What seems to work for me is "active" recovery - a good jog at just slow enough to catch my breath and get ready for the next interval but not too slow. The shorter the rest period the...

Dr. J: I think you make a very good point that running more does help people - that is the more miles the better as study after study shows that the only true way to improve your running ability, form, energy, economy is through running. There are three factors in training: Frequency = 3, 4 or 5 day...

Very good question: The way I use those calculators is to put in the time you WANT to run, not the time you can already run. These are a nice guideline if you are doing track intervals. When I ran my PB 5 K, once a week I would run 10 repeats of either the AT or V02 times based upon the time I wante...

A more technical term for "strides" are accelerations - that is start off slow, get to about 80% of your top end speed for a total of 100 Meters and then 100 meters of recovery - repeat 10 times. Some programs suggest you run at your 5 K pace. It should not be a sprint. It is speed work and should g...

Someone has to be the first. My words of wisdom is do not negligent the mental aspect of racing. Everyone will do the miles and follow the various schedules and yet before race day, especially among marathoners, you begin to question everything you have done. So although it may sound corny, little s...

The night before the race I lay out my race gear and pin on the bid. The morning of the race I tie my shoes once, the about 5 minutes before the race I untie and the double knot the shoes. I bounce a couple of times, deep breath and roll my shoulders. I always smile just after crossing the start lin...

I can even add another one from last night's run:

After the odd long run your spouse, roommate, etc yells at you not to get blood all over the carpet as once again your feet are bleeding and you have not even noticed that. In other words, many of your running socks have a red stain of honour.

12 K turned into a 22 K run. Whoa... how did that happen?! I have decided that this week - starting on Saturday I was going to run 100K. 18 K on Saturday, 30 K on Sunday and I was going to do 12K Monday plus a longer type run later in the week. I hit the 6 K mark just as a small rain shower hit - i...

10 K and under an hour seems like a reasonable goal but the most important part of the first race is to get a race under your belt- race pick up, nerves before the start, etc, etc. Then go from there.

You know you are a marathoner when ...

On my Sunday LSD I felt a sting on my left leg just above my shoe. The stride and pace were perfect so I told myself, "don't be such a wimp, continue running", so I did. First thought was that maybe a pulled something but there were no major muscles there. Next, my sock or shoe was off and pinching ...

Re: LSD Substitute???

My two cents: The Cons of running on the trail race: As trail running is different than road running, I am not sure you would get as much benefit running than just doing a 29K training run. In my opinion, a race is a wonderful training tool but only if run as a "race". I ran a half marathon about 10...

A nice easy 30 K run with a average heart rate 141 bpm around the Glenmore dam and Weaselhead.

Weather permitting, I would like to break 100K in 7 days for the first time every. At 48 k with 5 days left.

My advice is to treat it as an experiment, not a race and you will do fine.

That is a good test of pace, shoes, what to wear = a real life practice.

1:45 is definitely a tough order! With all due respect, 1:45 is only as tough as YOU make it. And by that I mean every runner has second thoughts and doubts just before the race, but ... successful runners (those who meet their goals) do believe in their ability and their training despite the surfa...
