Re: Article: Running Is The Worst Way To Get Fit

i don't know - i didn't like the tone of the original article, but to me the importance of incorporating strength training is almost a no-brainer if you read the evidence. especially as we age. brush your teeth, wear sunscreen, do some push-ups. i'm not getting the pushback. Actually, I think you a...

Fibonacci Wednesday

(11/23)

Slow 6K to test out the calf that I mildly strained on Sunday morning. The fresh air did me good, but I'll probably take another couple days off.

Re: Busted SUNDAY

Continuing with the "busted" theme, I had to walk the last few minutes of this morning's run to hold off a calf strain. I am now officially out of racing shape. 19K done.

Re: OK, so it's Saturday

Stupid Score season debut: -13 with the wind chill (which felt much colder being just a week and a half after hitting +20 degrees) for 25K and SS=325. Anyone not in BC is welcome to play along this winter.

Re: Article: Running Is The Worst Way To Get Fit

FWIW, I probably wouldn't suggest running to someone looking to get fit. Although hyperbolic at times, many of the arguments in the article have some truth: new runners are particularly prone to injuries, running doesn't do much to strengthen most muscle groups, and an unfit person probably won't be...

Supermoon Tuesday

Up at 4:30 for a brisk 13K. I saw a 7-point buck and dozens of white bunnies that are wishing it would friggin' snow already.

14K on the trails at sunset. With XC season now wrapping up, I might soon be doing some of my runs in the morning dark, thereby saving Habs from the tyranny of starting every daily thread.

Re: Routine Monday

Nothing routine about today's run. First, I took the XC kids to the high school track for an 8x200 tune-up workout in advance of this weekend's national meet. Then, I had an extended cooldown with a former student who trained with us for much of the summer. By the time I got home, it was dark and I ...

Re: Sleepy Saturday

... the weather forecast ... I liked your first spelling better: in Vancouver, all you're really wanting to know is whether or not it is going to rain when you go out, as your temperatures are usually going to be in a 10 degree range for the next six months. Think of the efficiency — "today's ...

XC expedition to a giant park for a tune-up run: 10 minutes easy, 20 minutes tempo, 10 minutes easy on the trails there, all while hoping to avoid encountering hormonal moose.

Re: What's a few seconds worth to you?

Hmmm... I see a few seconds over a one-mile hill as a 1-2% effect, which in a running context, is comparable to 3-5 minutes in a marathon. If a pair of shoes could promise me that, I'd look into it further. I get the sense that there are a lot of middle-aged triathletes for whom a really nice bike i...

Thanks for the link. Devin ran with our XC team for a year before transferring to another school. His marathon debut was a 2:43 and he had enough talent to knock another 10-20 minutes off that.

Re: Terrific Tuesday

We've been inside a cloud all day, making the ground soaked even though it never rained... kind of like certain winter days on the west coast. Easy 9K on the trails with the XC kids, followed by the realization that I forgot to bring my keys with me. So far, this has led to the following adventure: ...
