2014: Plans, Hopes and Aspirations

Hey all. Let's hear the skinny. What are your plans for the new year? I would like to suggest that everyone adds at least one component that is outside your current comfort zone. Even if it is outrageous are requires winning the lottery. Let's dream! My plans (I think I have "unrealistic" ...

Re: We're healthy, but we're broken

Interesting that the 2 above-average medical conditions are lung related. Now what do lungs have to do with ultra running? Thanks for the article ngcaper! I was out running (into the wind) on a road last year in -30C. A police officer slowed down and made it quite apparent that he did not think runn...

Across The Years Race

Hey all. Sort of a convoluted race report:

http://www.runnningchallenged.blogspot.ca/

Curly (my wife Lee Anne Cohen) set a world record for 12 hour road, W60-64. Nicely done dear!

2013 Reflection

Hey all. Low season in Canada... What event(s) had the greatest impact on your running this year? It might be a race or an epic training run, but let's hear about the challenges as well (how to handle these is good to know). For me: Good: Return to long distance running, post surgery. Bad: Misplaced...

Well done! I would chalk up the heavy legs to not enough time between 2 "push it" marathons. Still, you must have a good base to only lose 1 minute with only 4 weeks recovery!

Advice on Injuries

Hey all. For those of you who ponder how to best address injuries, here is what NOT to do:

Warning: Talk to experienced runners before implementing any of these suggestions!

Re: DION Eastern Ontario Snowshoe Running Series

I should send you some snow. We had 18" in Creemore on Sunday and just to make sure we don't lose our shovelling muscles too soon, another foot last night. I'm eyeing those snowshoe races - as retirement approaches!

Re: Philadelphia Marathon 2013

Great RR and good decision to drop the pace once 3:10 was not in the offings. Mind you, 3:20 is still smoking fast, so excellent "B" effort. Cramping might have been the cold, or not enough salt, or too much electrolyte, or... Don't you just love the marathon distance! And even when you ha...

Hey NGCaper. Dawn Hamel from Orillia, Ontario ran the Vermont 100K this year and I believe she shaved 2 hours off the woman's record. Not bad considering Dawn is in her 50's! I could ask Dawn to connect with you if you want.

Re: New Western States Qualifying Race list

After reading through the qualifying changes to WS, it appears that they are using 100 mile races in USA and "mainly" 100K races outside the USA. I think the reasoning is that 100K is a more standard distance internationally. Please note that WS is NOT a qualifier for the Dunedin 50 miler....

I agree! Don't run another marathon. Try a 50K instead. They are much easier. Just run it like a training run. What could be easier?

Nicely done Ron! You might not have reached one of your goals, but you ran almost a half marathon longer than your longest previous run. To someone who has just finshed their first 10K, THAT is an amazing feet (get it?)! Of course now all you are thinking is what you could do better... For next time...

I still chuckle at his comment on reaching 50K in the 24 hour race:

"I came through 50k in a comfortable 3:43".

Definitely not in my league!

New North American 100 Mile Record!

Hey! For those of you old enough to remember Andy Jones setting the overall NA 100 mile record (12:05:43) in 1997, Jon Olsen showed up at our little Ottawa 24 hour race and broke it! His RR is worth reading: http://www.irunfar.com/2013/10/jon-olsens-north-american-100-mile-record-report.html" onclic...

Re: Horror Hill - October 26/13

Hey Robinandamelia. Horror hill is an interesting trail race, where you don't have to worry about being separated from your drop bag for too long. The 2.5K loop allows for a few nutrition/hydration mistakes without the penalties incurred during a hot race with 20K between drop bag visits! You also g...

Dunedin 50 Miler: Bad Idea #20131102

Hi all. Based on significant pressure from Dave Robinson, we will be holding a 50 mile run in Dunedin on Saturday, November 2, 2013. One of the course options is the same course used for the Spring Warm-up. The blog entry indicates the run is not confirmed, but if we can rent the Dunedin CC, it is a...

Have fun at Hali y'all! I have to work or I would be there in some capacity (incapacity?). Say hi to Curly and Sharon at the 25 mile turn-around aid station.

Say hi to the bears for me! (Actually, don't mention my name - they are still miffed at me over some stupid fish incident...)
