Re: Tuesday's Tales

I left NOTL yesterday morning, at a balmy 8C. This morning, I woke up in Ottawa, and it was -11 and felt like -19! Ack! I brought a couple layers, but no long johns! It's supposed to be a little warmer tomorrow, so I'm hoping to run outside then. Otherwise, I'll use the dreadmill.

Re: NY Marathon cancelled

I still can't figure out what it all means. :( I get the feeling that maybe they just want everyone from 2012 to forget about it, and let them start fresh with 2013.

Kathrine Switzer at Niagara Falls Women's Half Marathon

I've just heard that Kathrine Switzer will be at the Niagara Falls Women's Half Marathon -- and possibly running it as well!! The race is June 2nd -- I did it last year and set a PB. :D

Is anyone registered or considering it?

Re: Anyone know of any good resourses for veggie meals?

I realize that this thread is a bit old, but if anyone wants some quick and easy ideas, here are my favourite go-to weeknight meals: 1) Curried chickpeas with green peas on rice -- I've attached the original Patak's recipe, but I skip the spices they suggest and just use their Mild Curry paste, then...

Waterloo Marathon

I just saw this:

www.waterloomarathon.com

It's in April -- cooler! a plus! -- and it's not too far away. On the other hand, there are only 5 entries so far -- not sure how big the field usually gets. It could be lonely out there.

Re: Triple Tuesday

The local running coach has a new approach. Instead of a temp run, a hills/interval run, and a very long run each week, plus a recovery run, the new plan is running 5 days a week, starting at 8k per day, and gradually increasing the distance each day. Eventually, I think he's planning to have one of...

Re: NY Marathon cancelled

I got an email yesterday that the hotel we were booked at issued a refund to everyone who cancelled / could not attend. They said they were wait listed and filled rooms, did not lose money, so did refunds regardless of whether you were ITP or not. Our ITP is crediting my cc for the full hotel refun...

Good ideas, folks -- thanks! I'll try to order some hemp hearts from Manitoba (gotta keep it Canadian if at all possible!) :-) Costco carries Hemp Hearts (at least they do here), so that my save you ordering them. If I can order more than $100 it makes sense to order from Manitoba Hemp, because of ...

Wow -- great info! Thanks, Carm and Minitee. I'm going to skip the greek yogurt (much as I'd love it!) and try the hemp hearts and chia seeds (do you need to add water to them first?) Yeah, my freezer used to be full of bananas for banana bread, and now it's full of bananas for smoothies! I find tha...

Re: Move it! It's Monday ....

This was my first "real' run since the marathon, and it was a beautiful night - clear and 14 degrees C!! In December!

I did 7k, with a gradual increase in speed, and a full-on effort for the last kilometer.

Smoothies

My stomach has always given me problems, and the latest advice is to avoid most cooked foods, wheat, dairy, etc.... Leaving me drinking my strawberry/banana/mango/spinach/almond smoothie. A lot. So, I've been coveting a Vitamix for several years, figuring I could make great smoothies. I came close t...

I used to use the Tassajara Bread Book years ago! Loved it. It was a great way to learn about bread baking.

I'd love to do this one. The only challenge that I'm having is childcare in Hamilton. I've called the Y, and they aren't offering child care that day.
Does anyone have suggestions?

Re: FOGGY Thursday

It's going to be a fun little day! Planning a 7k run at running club tonight, followed by physio with Dr Evil. But this afternoon, our local newspaper wants to interview me about how I started running, the NYC (non-)marathon, and finally running Philly. This might get our little NOTL Road Runners We...

Strange as it may sound, I find that depression can manifest itself as an achy body, fever/chills, and general malaise -- all below the neck. And in this case, I run, because I KNOW I'll feel better afterward. If it's a cold/sinus/headache/sniffles, I run. If my stomach's acting up -- which is prett...

Running to treat addictions

Even though I often use running as a way to "earn" my evening glass of vino, I like this article as a way of using life changes and the beneficial aspects of running as a way of overcoming addiction. I particularly love the line: "It's an apples-and-chain saws comparison"! http:/...

Re: Monday-time to get up!!

It's beautiful and sunny here in NOTL. The legs were achy enough to wake me this morning, but not half as bad as I expected. No running for me today, but likely a brisk walk or bike ride to "loosen things up".

First marathon completed! It was much harder than I anticipated, due to some tummy issues, and I finished in about 5:04. (Haven't checked the official results yet.). But still, I've finally done 42.2, so I at least know I can complete the distance.

Re: NY Marathon cancelled

Resolved in my favour. I called my credit card company the evening of November 5. faxed a copy of the race cancellation e-mail from NYRR to the credit card company November 6 and I just spotted a November 13 refund on my credit card statement. DB I've submitted a request for reversal as well. But b...
