Re: How do you stick to your healthy eating habits?

I just started using the myfitnesspal app and it is pretty comprehensive. Another tip I find is that if I brush my teeth at lunch or after a snack I'm less likely to want to eat anything other than water. Anything minty is good for this. So chewing a minty piece of gum or sipping on some minty tea ...

Re: Trails and Ticks

But other than LD (which is non-existant in MB so maybe I'm a bit biased), I've never understood why people freak out about ticks. They can carry a whole host of microbes that can cause amongst other things encephalitis (e.g. Powassan virus). http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/id-mi/tickinfo-eng.php" oncli...

Re: Veteran Arrested At Marathon-Misunderstood ?

It is not so much being uneducated as not understanding risks. The risk of needing a gun to protect yourself or your family, if you are just a normal citizen is very, very low. I don't carry a gun because I don't need to carry a gun. I use the same reasoning for not carrying rattlesnake antidote. A...

Re: Introduction

I second Stampie's advice on the Couch to 5K program...that is what got me started (almost 8 years ago...wow, where has the time gone!?), and restarted, and restarted again... I, too, experience a lot of pain/tightness in my anterior tibialis (the muscle that runs up your chin)...and it is mo...

Re: Blisters...to pop or not to pop?

I got a blister on the ball of my foot (in the space under my big toe and first toe) while walking the dog on Monday. I was worried because it was in a prime spot to be an issue in my heels (stilettos) at the Mess Dinner last night. I did not pop it and it settled back down and was not even noticeab...

Re: Information on cooking oils?

This just showed up in my FB newsfeed...I thought it timely. The smoke point of coconut oil may not be all that high, but it doesn't oxidize at high heat like other oils. I think that is where the "health" kicks in. http://notstepfordwives.com/cooking-oils" onclick="window.open(this.href);...

Have no fear! I'll give it a try.

I just wanted others to have a chance at it first, I was gonna jump on that within minutes of your posting, but if no one else wants it, you can send it to me. ;)

Re: Phone apps vs. GPS watches

I tested my iPhone vs. my Blackberry vs my 305 a few times on courses up to 10 km and they were always within the margin of error. I used my iPhone for about a year because i was thinking "I'm carrying it anyway". I've now switched back to the 305 because I find (because of how I train) I...

I love that missed Maniacs (those who don't come here often or just lurk occasionally now) are coming back to check in. It is so nice to see some familiar names that we don't hear from anymore posting their concerns. I hate that it takes a tragedy to bring people back, but I love that people know th...

Re: Boston Marathon 2013

Unbelievable! The official time was 4:09 which would be a crowded time on the course (although it's just alway crowded, isn't it). The video I saw from CNN shows that spectators, not runners, were in the thick of the blast. This is the most bizarre terrorist attack - what is the target? What would ...
