Re: Muskoka 70.3
Hills and I don't get along very well, so Muskoka was a brutal course for me. I found the last 30K of the bike to be the worst since the road was in horrible condidion and the hills were short and steep (which is my worst kind of hill). The down hill at the end of South Portage where you then make ...

Re: Challenge Roth 2013
I'm in for next year. There are a few things that might cause this to change, but unlike WTC, the Challenge series will refund most of your entry, so I registered. it sold out in just over 3 min at 2am our time on Mon morning. I had tried to register Dave at 2:04 and was denied....thus one of the f...

Re: Pool triathlon- what to wear?
sports bra (if tri top doesn't have built in bra), tri top and tri shorts. get a pair of arm warmers or ghetto arm warmers (cut off tube socks) to put on for the bike. 20 degrees is plenty warm enough and you won't notice the temp much due to high adreleline and heart rate. like Kiza said - the top ...

I really don't enjoy biking 160k, so I can't imagine running that far.
Congrats on your race!

Calgary Marathon
Don't forget about the Team Mito guys attempting to break a world record for a tethered marathon - they are attempting to run a 2:57 (Guinness record is 3hrs) - there are 10 of them running together - Darcy (my speed theory bike shop dude) is part of the group and I was talking to him y'day - excite...

To me it sounds ridiculous that you would have an aero helmet but not clipless pedals, but whatever

Re: Buying a Bike
my take - go and try out some bikes with a salesperson who can roughly 'fit' you - to basically know what size of frame you need - and when you try them out, you will see what you like, feels the best, etc. Just given your height, i'm going to guess you'll need a 52. Most of the other components on ...

Congrats Jenn.
Triathlon is fun. Don't overthink it and just enjoy the experience!
(the lane switching in the swim sounds painful though - the pool swim tris I have done are set up so you stay in your one lane the whole swim and there are lap counters!)

Re: Chlorine issues
My stylist suggests just a fortifying shampoo for your hair for post swim. I have tried the 'swim specific' shampoo, but I can't be bothered to spend the extra money. I use Clinque moisture surge for my skin. And living in Calgary, it's drier than dry. You just learn to adapt. and get used to the ch...

Re: Ocean Triathalons dealing with swallowing saltwater
I've done a few races with an ocean swim - up to ironman distance. It wasn't that big of a deal for me - you will swallow some water, but it wasn't enough to bother me. There were fresh water showers when we exited the swim, so I made sure I would rinse my mouth there and I also had a few sticks of ...

Re: Used Trainer
it's a 5 yr old trainer and you're not using it if you're selling it - I'd ask $75 to 100, given that she could get a new one for about $250. That's just me though.

Don't tell Calgarians, but Edmonton is actually a better place to train for triathlon too... :D Maybe it is, but I'd still rather live in Calgary than Edmonton. Shhh! I'm trying to rationalize living in the Artic. Self-delusion is a wonderful thing. I'd rather live in Australia than Canada... but i...

Can I ask why you would use a snorkel? You will swim slower than without. Limiting your breathing through a snorkel is hypoxic at anything beyond a very easy effort.

Re: Training Advice for Ironman Distance
I've never done that. My longest 'brick' run off the bike was a 2hr run after a 3.5 hour bike or something (this was back in 2009) - most of the time, it's been a long ride (160k or so) plus a short brick (about 20-30min) and then do the long run on tired legs the next day (up to about 3hrs). But wh...

Re: NY Marathon cancelled
Interesting. So, if you take the refund, you don't have guaranteed entry for future years. If you choose the guaranteed entry option, then you don't get any money back and have to pay AGAIN for your next race? I guess that would be the same situation if you had deferred your registration. sounds li...

Do a search on slow twitch and you can get a better idea how people are getting in and when they are selling out. There's usually a thread for each race when the registration opens up.

You rarely have to travel to enter a race - just have to be nimble and quick on your keyboard when the registration opens. The 'easiest' swim I heard about was NYC this past summer which was current aided (the Augusta 70.3 is similar and I had a stellar swim time there this past sept), but NYC has b...
