Quirky Race Prizes

Postby The Joggler » Sat Jan 19, 2008 7:19 pm

I'm doing some research for a piece in Canadian Running Magazine about wacky race prizes. Anyone know of any good ones?

I once heard about a race somewhere in Ontario that gives out dairy milking stools for age-group awards -- that's the kind of thing I'm looking for. I'm trying to get a sampling from across Canada, but might use some international ones if they're good.

There's the rock given out at the Lost Souls Ultra. I think Size5 has one.

Oliver Wine Capital of Canada tri gives out engraved wine glasses. While I have never won one of those, I have won a draw prize two years in a row: a bottle of local wine :)

This is not a race prize...but raffle prizes given out at the Brockville HalfM held on the Parkway in September....a half dozen eggs :D
I got one of those prizes in 2006.
Evidently a local egg producer has been donating many many eggs over the years!

The night Crawler 5 mile race in Toronto gives out worms to the winners. I always get a laugh out of seeing the winners getting a box of worms and the expressions on there faces.

It weighs 30 pounds -taken from the river beds where the race is run, engraved with your name and fisher time. Very special.

hey, didn't S5 also win a free registration for the following year ??:think:

On another note, can't remember which race, but the winner got a 10-20lb side of beef, if I recall :think:

Nope, she got a free registration in the 2007 Blackfoot for winning the 2006 50 miler, and I believe she blamed me for doing the 100k as her freebie (and smacked my likeness on a table (ouch)).

Known and agreed upon fact! Joggler - I seriously think it is warped to give someone who wins an ultra a free entry into another ultra.... especially when it is there first time running a 50 miler.....

I think a free ultra entry qualifies as quirky, as do worms with surprised looks on their faces. Thanks for the tips, everyone.

Can anyone confirm the race that gives out the side of beef?

Not really a prize, but the medal for the Calgary marathon (full only) is a western-style belt buckle.

The only other example I have is the Robert Hamilton Memorial Race in Calgary (5 and 10 mile) which gives out gingerbread cookies for age group medals.

I seem to remember a story in Runner's World about odd prizes. Bill Rodgers won a chainsaw, along with a slew of other strange prizes.

The standard prize in Thanksgiving Day "Turkey Trot" races in the USA is a turkey.

The Belt buckles given out at Western States and at Badwater are legendary.

The Tomatoman Du/Tri has tomatoes for everybody! :D

I once won a homemade trophy - made completely of nuts and bolts. If you like, I can grab a picture of it! It's from the now defunct Hammerhead Du.
