Mantracker TV show, Do you think you could beat him?

Postby _Eric_ » Thu Mar 05, 2009 7:23 pm

Hi guys I've been watching the TV show "Mantracker" it seems like most of the contestants are out of shape and/or "all talk and no walk".

I'd love to see him and is horse try to catch one of "us" (real runners) you know the type "MANIAC"

What's your opinion, do you think an Ultra-runner could beat him?

For those who don't know about "Mantracker" here's the link: http://www.mantracker.ca/ Have a look at behind the scenes, I'm sure no cameraman could follow me in the bush for 50 km...

To me the show look like it's staged and all BS. There is no way that he could track and keep up with a distance runner.

I would consider applying but only if I the other "Pray-runner" could run at a similar "stride(r)" has me.

The only person I'd put my money on would be ultrarune. Anyone else would be toast (including me).

It does look a little fake, though.

No offense, but when it comes to bushwacking - he sucks

Endurance is super important but not everything !!!!

"Know your land, know your prey" ?

Works both ways - you got know how to travel the land & how to avoid the hunter

It's more than just conditioning !!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes but it's only 40 to 50km I think the show is fake.

True........ but from what of seen, the people who win are those who know how to travel the back country.

The "prey" often don't have any specific knowledge of the area - they have a map & a compass. Mantracker always has an experienced sidekick with intimate knowledge of the terrain, trails, roads, etc. That helps to narrow down where the prey are going & where they may come out.

I don't care how good of shape your in - a horse can out run you unless you go "off road".

And I don't think most people realize how much of a trail they really do leave behind :D

Exactly. I've watched the show from it's inception. I don't see it as overly "staged or fake" though. I grew up in the country & spent A LOT of time exploring the woods, as well as almost 20 years riding horses. There is a lot that they can do - so don't count them out.

As for the few who I have seen beat him - it was because of great "bush" and out-door skills.

The worst was 2 women, who gave the rest of us a bad name with the shrieking & noise. Umm - if he can't figure out where you are based on foot prints - he'll certainly hear you biotching at each other... :?

Wouldn't the camera crew following the "prey" be a giveaway as to their location?

I've watched a number of times. I think the distance isn't huge but the catch is the terrain and then having to do some kind of orienteering as well. I have seen some decently fit "prey" but I haven't seen any ultramarathoners  yet .

Do the "prey" always know the area? I've seen it in some pretty dense bush country......

I actually think the people who win A) get lucky and B) are fit and C) actually try to do some "out smarting" because you really just can't "run as fast as you can" and out wit the rider/horse.

I've thought about that - but the camera crew isn't always there, sometimes you get the "prey cam". I would hope they're only around when the trail has already been picked up & man tracker is close - I could be wrong but I'd like to think there was a fairness employeed - otherwise it wouldn't be as popular as it is.

I think most of the time they don't know the area at all..... which gives Mantracker with his sidekick the advantage in that regard.
