Ray Zahab - an amazing story

Postby flexrun » Sun Nov 01, 2009 11:05 pm

Ray Zahab is the founder of Impossible2Possible and Runner-In-Chief for iRun magazine. For those of you that haven't heard of Ray, he has an amazing story that everyone can relate to. In 1998, he went from smoking a pack-a-day of cigarettes and an unhealthy life style to running ultra foot races.

If you ever get the chance to watch it, go to his website and download the movie about him and two others running the entire 4,300 miles across the Sahara Desert. I found it to be a very inspiring and exciting story. As a result of this adventure, he is now involved in a lot of charity work. http://store.nehst.com/running-the-sahara.html

In 2008 he became the first person to trek to the South Pole on a 1130 km route solely on foot. He told me that this was even tougher than running the Sahara.

I've seen this - great film. He reminds me of me - minus the 50 miles a day part  . IN THE DESERT! Cool.

(where can you download it free? It's asking me for $9.99)

I paid the $10, and it was money well spent to support the water issue in Africa. I have met Ray once or twice and he is just a regular guy that doesn't think about what he can't do, but goes out to find out what he can do. He is one of my biggest inspirations and heros of running, along with Terry Fox, Dean Karnazes, Ron Gehl and Laurie McGrath and the list goes on.

If you get a chance to hear Ray as a motivational speaker, RUN

He's funny, engaging and extremely inspiring. He was the key-note speaker at the Can-Fit-Pro Ontario conference this past August and spoke to about 2000 people in the fitness industry. My co-workers couldn't figure out why I was so excited when I heard he was speaking, but after his presentation they were all fans!

Hey, be careful around me, apparently I'm a chronically offended kind of person... ;)

Ray is a really cool dude and the Sahara film is well worth the 10 bucks. I've watched it a couple of times and it never fails to inspire.

I read the article on him in Canadian Running. What is crazy is that he has only been running for 5 years. He is local too, from Chelsea.

I liked the movie, but loved the supplemenatry footage -- I wish the two had been integrated better, but that's because I like geeky details that the movie omitted. In both the movie and his book Ray comes across as a really likeable guy - I'd love to listen to him speak about his experiences.

He co-hosts the Running Show on Ottawa radio. They interviewed Dave (Run26.2) about his trip to New York plus Marg & me about RM. You can subscribe on iTunes:

I've had the chance to run with him a few times, he's a real nice guy and passionate about what he does!

:D
I ran until my muscles burned and my veins pumped battery acid. Then I ran some more...
