The Running Mania Toronto (RMT) Marathon: Preparing the Bid

Postby canalrunner » Wed Jan 27, 2010 2:58 pm

As some have said, the choice for a Toronto Marathon does not have to be between the two existing organizations--although I like them both. Why not a Running Mania Marathon bid for Toronto: the RMT Marathon. Why not bid? There is the experience of the Rubble Yell to draw on so...what would we want..besides brownies at the finish and no fee. Perhaps the RMT could get sponsorship from the Registered Massage Therapists. Here are my thoughts:

Marathon Only: This is about building the Toronto Marathon not increasing the number of the participants by having lots of events.

Course: First part of Toronto Goodlife course, once at the Lakeshore use the Toronto Scotia course (wider for more runners) Figure out how to have the finish at Nathan Phillips square. That would be a fast course and show off the city nicely. Plan B would be to take the course east out Bloor to the start of Danforth and then down Broadview to Front/Eastern. Great views going over the viaduct and a nice downhill on Broadview.

Name: If we want to sell naming rights, why not merge the existing sponsors: the Goodlife Scotia Toronto Marathon or the GST. Everyone loves the GST.

Date: Use the October date. Better for training--more consistent temperature.

Swag: Medal in the shape of the CN Tower (perhaps a sponsor). A little Freudian but doable. Cool running hats rather than tech shirts for everyone--I have too many tech shirts. Actual food at the finish or chicken soup. Not big on having more gatorade and energy bars after a marathon--don't know why--perhaps that is because that is all I have had for the last 4 hours.

Pacers: Scotia pace team is the best organized in the country.

Crowds: Bus people in from Boston and New York to provide the cheering, because you can pretty much guarantee Torontonians won't show up unless it is the Toronto Maple Leafs marathon....and you know that wouldn't be a very good marathon.

Other race: Allow for a half marathon-10k event in September as a warm-up to the event.

So what are some other ideas
The longest journey begins with a single step.

Hold it somewhere other than Toronto.

I think we should concentrate on the important stuff, so, yeah, the brownies.

Buffets and cook-off stations along the route with great chefs. Wine and beer tasting stations. Shooter and spirit stations. Chocolate stations. Massage stations.

That's one way to keep the size of the marathon small....

Marathons are 42.2 kilometers, not 42.2 years

Perhaps the pace car could have the Stanley Cup in the back.

Closest Torontonians will come to seeing it for the next 20 years.
