I'm doing the 30 km and will be dressed in a fairy costume, following the theme of 9 other ladies from the Ottawa area

I'm in for the 30k, as long as my babysitters are able to keep Zack that weekend. It'll be a last minute decision for me. Hoping to be there!

I'll try to come cheer. I'm running ITT earlier in the day and won't likely be up to running.

I will also come to cheer as I live so close. I'm racing the Toronto 10-Miler the week before, so don't want to race on back to back weekends.

I'm skipping it this year! It was pretty brutal for me last year (spent a good portion of the 30k trying to formulate a plan on how to bail out...but couldn't find one lol).
I'm going to do the local 5K in the morning here instead.

That was me from about km 21-30! I spent an hour after the race telling Joe to never let me do it again...then I started thinking about what I'd do differently next year

It starts/ends in the same place, but you go further west to start (all the way to the south end of Cherry St.), same middle part out around the Lighthouse on the Spit, then further east into Ashbridge's Bay before coming back to the finish.

Last year's 30 K is tied with Boston 2008 for the title of "Worst Race Ever" and I have no desire to risk that happening again. Too bad, in a way, because that day is our wedding anniversary and it could be a fun way to celebrate. Guess the celebration will be coming out to cheer instead

What stops me from doing this one is the fact that it is a night race.
I have such a routine for morning races down pat. I'm NOT a night runner.

Two years ago I had a bad 15K race here at night - my stomach gave me horrible problems. But last year I changed my strategy, which was to only take in liquid nutrition for most of the day, and that worked really well for me. I waited to eat solid food AFTER the race.

Hmmmm, reading about the "bad and the ugly" -- was it all tummy issues or was it too hot?? Any tips for us "first-timers"??

If you're not used to a) racing in the heat, or b) racing later in the day when you've been eating all day, it can cause some problems.
Stay off your feet as much as you can the day of the race, eat lightly (and liquid, if possible), but don't over-hydrate, either. Adjust your expectations if it's a warm day.

For me, it was all tummy issues. I had done this race the year before, actually had a PB, and tried to do everything the same (including rest, and eating and drinking carefully the day before and the day of). But somewhere around 11 or 12 km, I started having major GI issues.
A big part of the problem is that the race organizers don't bring in separate porta potties and put them along the course - they rely on the couple that are already on the Spit plus the washrooms at the Beach (they do have a lot of porta potties at the start area, so no issues there). What that means is that there is a long stretch in the middle where there are none. And of course, that was the point where I was having issues. So instead of being able to make a quick stop, I had to fight my way through something like 7 or 8 km, with lots of walking. After that, there was no way to recover the time lost, and I basically finished just to get the training mileage.
It was quite a warm, humid evening, IIRC, but there was lots of cloud cover so that aspect was actually ok.
No real tips for first timers, except to try and do some running in the evenings so that your body has a chance to get used to it and you can figure out what works. During the hottest days of summer I sometimes do my long run Saturday or Sunday evening, and that's been ok. But of course if it was going to go wrong, it was going to be during a race

I just mentioned that to my mother today b/c I generally run at the hottest time.of day. (just what works best with kids and.someone.to watch them) so I will do a few evening runs for the feel.

You haven't been following my log, have you!
Andy drags me through crazy tempo runs late in the day every week. Yesterday it was +33 or so. I'm acclimatized...it'll still suck if it's super hot though!
the food is the worst part for me since we're travelling to the race.
