What are you talking about?!
Cops are giving all the info that they know about this case.
It's the family especially that daughter who does all the strange tweeting about her dad and the wife, that seems like they are hiding something about the missing man. Does he have a history of depression that the family is ashamed to make public? Quite honestly, after seeing the daughter & mom on TV, they don't seem too distraught. Worried yes, but they seem quite calm on TV. Are they revealing everything about their dad/hubby that may help this case?
I think this guy just "left" on his own accord. My opinion only.

The cops aren't exactly a fountain of info either though. They're not saying why they've basically concentrated the search in the conservation area. I drove down Brock today towards the lake and didn't see anyone searching. I think they know more than they're telling us, not as much as the family though. I can't judge the family. They must be in shock, and it would be difficult for their personal struggles to be thrust into the public sphere.
What doesn't make sense to me, and what the cops likely have a theory about, is WHY the conservation area. It's unlikely that he would've chosen to run there as a route, and if he's gone somewhere with the intention of harming himself, why aren't they checking bridges, the lake, etc?

I think if he left on his own accord, wouldn't he have taken wallet, car, phone something...just to go out with nothing and walk....to go where? It seems odd.... Maybe the family did something to him...how's that for a plot twist...

My general experience with the police is that either they know something and they're holding their cards close OR they flat out don't know and aren't willing to let anyone know that either.

But the missing soldier, Jason Anderson, (my former neighbour) fortunately was found and returned home...so at least there was a happy ending there.

I hate to say it, but I'm not holding out much hope for the teacher's case. I do hope that I end up proven wrong, though.

What time of year was that? I'm not familiar with that situation.
It certainly hasn't been great weather here for an injured person to hunker down until someone finds them.

This morning's update from Durham police - he may simply have left on his own, there isn't much evidence to support the second run theory.
Hmm....

Well, if he left on his own without cell phones and cards etc. It might have been planned all along.

A bit more irrelevant info from my sister:

She has worked with him for 25 years and found him very much a loner. BHS staff has always been a close knit group, but he has always been a bit to himself. Pleasant and a good teacher, but not much to report beyond that.

The staff have been shopping and doing meals for the family all week.

The staff and students are very befuddled, and unsure what to make if it. Classes go on, but the school itself has been disrupted by the presence of police etc.

Interesting note: During the last teacher's strike, he was one of two staff to cross the picket line. My sister said that was never really held against him at all.

I think they all just want some sort of closure on this.

This past fall Jason had been in a fender bender and the collusion set off a PTSD episode. He then drove his car from Fredericton NB towards his previous unit (2RCHA in Petawawa) where he had returned from deployment. He was spotted in Quebec and finally found in Kingston after selling his car for money. He did not realize what he was doing the whole time.

He was apprehended my military police and brought home to his wife and 7 kids and has been under medical care since (to help him deal with his PTSD)

The runner and Smitherman's partner seem to have similarities. Leave, come home. Leave again never to come home. Very sad. :(

Still nothing. :(
I was trying to think about how the family might be reacting, and it made sense to me that if the public thinks he's killed himself, they're not as likely to keep looking for him. That could explain the deleted tweet and the withholding of info if in fact he is depressed or something. You would think someone would have seen him by now if he had just left, though.
I have never met this man but this has been on my mind since I found out about it. It's just so disturbing.

I went for a run yesterday (in Whitby), didn't see a single other runner... usually I see lots. Not sure if it's a coincidence. And typically I feel almost invisible, yesterday I felt like everyone was taking a second look at me! Presumably he's not still running but I think it's in people's heads.

Not to mention the constant presence of helicopters overhead, and police cruisers everywhere. Hard to ignore.

I ran by the command centre yesterday while they were doing a press conference- that street is one of my regular routes. I felt almost guilty that I was running by as this was going on. It was on my mind the whole time- I kept thinking about where he might have headed.

Lets hope it has a happy ending. It is thought consuming though that's for sure.

The scenario that keeps playing in my mind is that he slipped and hit his head on Sunday night while running (that's why he was gone so long that night), but didn't realize how injured he was. Went for his run Monday morning and his head injury from the night before got worse and it really was him that QuickChick saw. He was wandering around disorientated then finally collapsed somewhere far, far from where he should have been.
I sure hope not, but as each day passes a positive outcome gets slimmer and slimmer. :(

I doubt it at this point, that I saw him anyway. While the image of the man I saw still looks shockingly like him, I told the police that he had been wearing an orange jacket. This is unusual enough IMO that if he had owned an orange jacket they might be thinking that's what he had on. I am still haunted by it though- he looked like he was struggling (barely looked at me when I waved and was grimacing), but he was going uphill and I was coming down.
I'm hoping they are looking more at possibilities around him disappearing, for example- it's not a long run to the GO station. Perhaps he had been planning something. :(

Latest update, pretty much the same as previous updates - no sign of him, no new leads. People keep reporting seeing runners with beards (ie. me!) to police.

Sounds like they're poised to call the search off entirely tomorrow.

I missed that one! Though, I'm surprised this happened. Anytime Scotty takes his troops out for a run or march either he, himself, or someone else assigned, will double back to "bring up the rear" regularly to make sure no one falls out of the run or march and gets left behind.

Well they've called off the active search, and police are basically saying they're stumped. :( I received 2 calls yesterday from the police asking me to reiterate my tip though... I guess they were just going through all the people who contacted them. I wonder if they have sent divers down into the harbour. :( It just doesn't make sense that he'd up and disappear... he's 2 or 3 years away from retirement, probably. He's a teacher... our retirement plan is really good. He could've run and biked all he wanted.

But this isn't about biking and running. :(

From all accounts though, he was (is?) a really avid runner and cyclist, and he also travelled a lot with his family. Wouldn't it have been great for him to retire and be able to pursue his hobbies all he wanted? That's all I meant. If he just wanted to disappear from his family, it just seems like he would've been more likely to wait. And if he did disappear, it would've required careful planning, false ID's likely, an accomplice perhaps. So why now? Unfortunately I still think it's more likely he ran to the lake. What a horrible thought. :(

If he really is suffering from depression then logic doesn't always come into the picture.

Yes, I think the whole 'had to escape for a while' thing does not fit at all.

I'm afraid I agree with QC - it seems the only logical explanation at this point.

School is still reeling from this. The semester is over, but they don't know who is going to take over his classes for next semester.

My sister said she worked with him for 25 years, and never really knew him, and that he was a loner among an otherwise VERY social faculty.
