Running doesn't protect you if you sit all day

Postby La » Thu Apr 17, 2014 8:54 am

Most of us are fairly active, logging at least 30mins of daily physical activity (and some of us much more than that!). Just when we thought all this activity was helping us, comes this study that days that, even if you exercise for 30 minutes per day (their study had people exercising before work), but then you sit on your butt for 9 hours, you're still at risk for diseases affected by blood sugar/insulin levels (e.g., Diabetes).

They claim that you're better to do 90 seconds of activity every 30 minutes over a 9-hour work day, then to start your day with 30 minutes of exercise and then sit all day.

That said, most of us would benefit from doing our pre-work 30 minutes (or longer) AND also doing 90 seconds of activity every 30 minutes spent sitting (my opinion, not their conclusion).

ETA: Actually, it is their conclusion:
What is the take home message?
Obviously there are well established benefits of participating in structured, longer bouts of physical activity on a regular basis, and we don’t want this research to distract from that, or discourage people from trying to fit at least 30 min of physical activity into their lives on most days of the week…. However, this research does suggest that regularly breaking up periods of prolonged sitting could also be a very important thing to do for your health. So if you’ve been sitting at your computer reading this… maybe its time you got up and walked around, it doesn’t have to be for long… about a 1 min 40 sec should do it.

I get restless throughout the day anyway and find excuses to do loops of my office.

I find if I drink a lot of water during the day I'm up walking to refill my bottle, and also walking to the washroom... 8)

Do people really sit at their desk for longer than 30-60 minutes at a time? Unless I'm in an all day meeting or training, I'm moving a lot throughout the day!

I used to, when I had work that required focusing on the screen for hours at a time (web development). Now my time is more diverse so I move around a lot more.

There are definitely people whose jobs require sitting at a desk for hours at a time. Thankfully I've never had one of those jobs. :)

On a busy day, I've found it's very easy to sit at a desk for a stretch of five or six hours straight and not even really notice it. Time flies unless your bladder intervenes.

In the last few years, I've made a point of going to the grocery store to get lunch every day and more lately I will get up to get a glass of water or climb the stairs for a bit a few times in the work day.

I get to work about 7 am and typically leave about 3 am, however, so I'm usually doing lots of other things, particularly in the summer, from 3 pm to 10 pm. Cycling, running, cross-country skiing, etc. Suits me well.
Dear Lord, help me be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.
