While we're on the topic of riding long distances to raise money, another friend of mine (and 7 of his friends) are participating in the Race Across America from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD. The race starts on June 17.
They are called Team True Patriot Love and they are 8 guys (and a support crew of 12-16) who will be cycling in relay formation (non stop, day and night), hoping to break the Canadian 8-person team record of 6 days, 2 hours and and 21 minutes.
Live tracking is here: http://www.raceacrossamerica.org/live-tracking.html
They are raising funds for the True Patriot Love Foundation, which raises funds for Canadian veterans and their families.

Re: Race Across America (RAAM)
The race started on Saturday and Team TPL is currently in 2nd place!! That's pretty good for a rookie team. From what I read, the lead team is very experienced and racing like a well-oiled machine.

They're currently in south-western Colorado at mile 1,021.
The solo riders left a few days ahead of the teams. The lead guy is on the Illinois/Indiana border and has covered 2,300 miles so far.

They are in SW Kansas right now. The graphic pins on the tracker shows them in first place, but the leader board shows them in second, so not really sure right now. If I look at the leader board they're only 9 miles behind the leaders.
1431 miles covered so far.

So, they HAVE moved into first place!! They're now 19 miles ahead of the previous leaders. They're 3 checkpoints away from Wichita, KS.

Team TPL is still in the lead. They're about 5 miles ahead of the second place team, just outside St. Louis, MO.

Re: Race Across America (RAAM)
TTPL has dropped back to 2nd place. They are at mile 2640, which puts them past Cincinnati, OH, 38 miles from the next checkpoint in Athens, OH. Then they cross over into the northern tip of West Virginia. They are 34 miles behind the leaders (the team that they've been trading places with for the lead). They're definitely well on track to beat the Canadian record for an 8-person team. They're likely to finish in under 6 days at this pace.
ETA: they crossed the most recent checkpoint in 4 days, 17 hours and 36 minutes, which is 41 minutes behind the leaders.

I don't know if it's easier to follow directly from the TTPL web site:

ETA: it's much easier to follow on a full web browser rather than a mobile browser.

Re: Race Across America (RAAM)
They've closed the gap a bit and are now only 10 miles behind the leaders. They're approaching the Allegheny Mountain range. It's nothing like the Rockies that they went through at the beginning of their race, but it's still a lot of climbing. Then it's all downhill into Annapolis.

They're 2 checkpoints away from the finish! Still in second place. I think they're only about 30 miles from the finish, so they'll be done within the next 2 hours, I think.

Their current elapsed time is 5 days, 7 hours and 30 minutes. They'll likely beat the previous Canadian record by 15-20 hours.

Re: Race Across America (RAAM)
Less than 5 miles to go! The other team has finished (5 days, 17 hours, 44 minutes). Team TPL is solidly in 2nd place. Go TTPL, GO!

Very cool! I have it in my head to do this race someday (as a team), if I ever win the lottery and feel like hating life for a week.
