What a crappy day!

Besides, scrummy, are there any other RMer racing today?

Top Canadian pros are:
Reid Coolsaet
Eric Gillis
Krista Duchene

At 15K, Reid is in 16th (37s back) and Eric is in 20th (1:56 back).

At the half, Krista is in 13th (41s back).

Scrummy hasn't started yet.

Krista is still in 13th at 25K (1:57 back).

I had to step away for a while and just saw the result... Krista came 3rd!!!

Top 8 women were all North American. Wow! Very surprising.

And the Japanese guy who went out front early (and was then pulled back) ended up winning!

9th place for Reid. Looks like Eric was DNF.

Jesse is at 30K in 2:28.

Crazy day in Boston!

I was watching while doing my run on the treadmill-- what an exciting race! So happy for Des Linden-- I was crying watching her finish. Also really happy for Krista-- earlier in the race it didn't seem like she had a chance at the podium, and the announcers were never covering her-- I had no idea she had pulled ahead (wasn't following the online tracking for the leaders).

And Jesse looks like she's having a strong race, despite the terrible conditions. Training in the Canadian winter has toughened her up for sure! She's on pace to hit her goal........

I'm tracking a couple of west coast friends who are both running their first Boston.

Marianne was through half at 1:47:41 and is on target for 3:39:xx- will be another qualify for her.
Parent from our school is at half in 1:50:17 and in on target for 3:50:xx which would be a huge qualify for her (she's my age group with 4:00:00 qualify time).
Seems they are handling the conditions just fine!!

I think there were a few reasons for their lack of coverage:

1. Des Linden being in the lead - they were really focused on that since she's American. And her lead was about 4 minutes (in the end).
2. Yuki, the men's leader, was so close behind Des. I noticed when he turned onto Hereford that's where he passed Krista. He passed Sellers (the 2nd place woman) along Boylston. They never even mentioned her name, though they did mention Krista coming in 3rd.
3. Normally, the women finish much earlier and the men aren't so close behind, so they had to choose which race to cover, especially given the late surge by Yuki.

Amazed they were able to get through those conditions.

Super discipline race by scrumhalfgirl starting the first 5k at 8:27/mile and finishing sub 8:00/mile overall. Impressive!

Or Desiree who waited back with her at the port-a-potties to help her get back into the pack... then goes on to WIN THE RACE!!

We also don't know if it was just a pee break.

It was actually even more than that! Over four minutes - amazing. It’s hard to believe how much ahead she was at the end, as so many top runners were struggling.

Best Boston I've ever watched!

So glad that Desi won. Yuki (the citizen runner) was unbelievable.

Huge congratulations to Krista and Reid. Go Canada!

It was her 2nd marathon ever, and she's a total amateur! She works full-time as a nurse.

The TV commentators are getting a lot of flak for their poor coverage of the race. They didn't know anything about Yuki and made comments early on that at the pace he was going he'd be "handed a piano" around the 5-10K point in the race. Essentially, they'd written him off as a camera hound who didn't deserve their attention.

Now, to be honest, I didn't know who he was. But I'm not paid to announce the race! They should have done their homework. :naughty:

Very cool story about Sarah Sellers. I can't stop reading about her!

To be fair, although she's not a professional runner, she was a very accomplished collegiate runner and came close to qualifying for the 2012 Olympics in the 10,000m. Although I'm not surprised the announcers didn't know her, since nobody did!

A bit more about her-- after graduating, an injury prevented her from continuing to run at that level. When her brother said he was going to register for the Boston Marathon, she trained enough to run the Huntsville Utah Marathon in the very last weekend of the qualifying window-- ended up WINNING the woman's race and setting a course record with a time of 2:44, a time which also qualified her to run in the elite women's wave in Boston. But that race was on minimal training. To train for Boston she was coached by her former college coach, who is former professional runner.
For Boston she thought she was in shape for about 2:33, but at least wanted to run an Olympic qualifying A-standard time of 2:37. I think she has HUGE potential to compete with the best if she decides to continue marathoning. She did make the B-standard for the US Olympic qualifying marathon, so I expect she will run in that race (yet to be determined location in the spring of 2020) -- but I expect she will run other marathons before than.

Yeah, when I read the initial story I thought she truly came out of nowhere, but in reality she had a spectacular college career and was flying under the radar here due to all her time off for injury and school. Still an incredible accomplishment.
