True enough. My training schedule has me right around 300k anyway, so mine is more of a prediction than a goal.

same... and a motivator not to slack during taper, lol.

It's kind of cool that people are looking out for one another... and willing to share thoughts on mileage.
We have a good little thing going on here. :D

There aren't enough hours in a day.

I don't know where you people find the time. Well except mcshame, but getting up that early does not compute.

some of us don't have kids! ;)

my only responsibility outside of work is my dog, and I take him running with me! (not all the time, but enough that I don't feel guilty for neglecting him. ;)

Yep. No kids here, and I'm now living as a single (married yet separated) person. While I would not wish the demise of a marriage on anyone (or the outcome of not having kids as a result), a positive outcome of these kinds of life events can be more time. And I'm looking at this as a blessing in disguise now that I'm mostly over the initial shock of the whole thing. I have time, I love running, and I'm not going to squander this opportunity to explore running in some new ways. My hat goes off to all of you who do manage balancing full family lives and running.

Eta: In my case, it's just me and two cats who don't particularly like LSDs.

Do you have trouble out-running your dog? Mine used to poop out after 6 or 7 k.

As far as balancing home life, helps that my kids are teenagers now and relatively maintenance-free and that my wife also likes to do fitness stuff. So if I'm out running, she might be with me or at a class or in our home gym.

Try dividing by zero... never mind.. ;) (another thread). Erin does the same thing, early morning. Honestly, you do start to get use to it when you get into the routine. And the morning is cooler and barely a car around, it's a great time to run.

never! mine will go forever. I've got him up to about 35k on the trails.

when I lived in Alberta we used to go hiking in Kananaskis... I've had him up to 8000 feet, through snow deeper than himself, and he just plugs on. He'll go as far as I ask him to, and then crash when we get home.

I want my next dog to be able to run. My current dog is a mastiff/ lab mix and she's hard pressed to run more than 50m at a time. She's fine for long walks, but she has never liked running- even when she was young.
Keep on rolling, just a mile to go. Keep on rolling my old buddy, you're moving much too slow.

An hour a day at a 5 minute pace = 372 kilometers. Throw in a couple extra hours on the weekends and you're at 500.

I'm sure I could find an hour a day. Take the time I'm running now, spend a little less time surfing the internet, showering, and generally f***ing around and I think its doable without a major lifestyle hit.

If I took the time I spent reading about running and thinking about running and talking about running and spent it running, I'd be there already.

except most of that, for many of us, is done during work hours* so we wouldn't really gain.

Or about 20% less if you are slow like me, so about 300K.

Even if I tried to do my easy 6:00/km pace for an hour a day, my legs probably would not make it without something giving in-- would need to slow down in order to build up that much volume. So for me it would take more like two hours/day average.

Which I COULD do if I built up to it-- just not sure I'd want to.

I have no idea if I could do it or not - I don't want to either. I'm just doing the math on how long it would take and its not as intimidating a chunk of time once you figure it out.

Also, wouldn't it be less of a time commitment than, say, ironman training?

my impression is yes.

When I run with my friend who's training for ironman, after the run he drops me off at home and then immediately is off to the pool for a swim.... which means he's automatically doubling my time commitment (though I haven't compared total hours over the course of a week... I should do that!). And look at Carla.... she never stops working out, lol.

but some would argue that mixing up the sports over the same given time is easier on the body.

Yes, in the meat of ironman training especially if you include transportation time to and from the pool/lake, etc.

And bike workouts are just ... longer. :) My friend Mike was doing 24 hours/week training at the peak of IM.
