Yes.
And you'll notice I'm also not training for an Ironman!

Yes.

I've got everything planned out to get 400km in including my taper, race, and recovery. :P And with plenty of wiggle room to do a bit more.

I'd love to see that plan, since my race is the same distance but I'm aiming for 300k.... how are you getting so much more?!

I'd like to see both of your plans! Hypothetically speaking, if a person were considering an ultra:
- How many years of running experience (and racing) is first advisable?
- How much of a base (let's say in the year leading up) is recommended?
- Is starting with a 50K the way to go (safely assuming we are not all Scott Jurek)?

My money is on Uri, err Kristen ...
Odds-on favorite is Erin, just because he has the advantage of running after Mcshame posts is daily runs ...

No advantage for me on that one- I roll out of bed and am on the road by 5:15am, so McShame and I are out running at the same time.
My big secret weapon is my mother-in-law . We're spending a week there in July, so I'll be doing some pretty serious "sanity runs." As in "if I don't get out of this house I am going to go insane!"
dale_nesbitt wrote:Scott Jurek actually started off with a 50 miler (the same race I'm doing in July!)
Oh yeah, I'm not going to let you in on my super-secret training plan. I'm not going to show the enemy my marching orders! ultraslacker, I'll send you a PM.

Well, I'm not sharing mine either. (cr@p! I'd better get a plan!)
ultraslacker wrote:Kristen: As was said above, ultras are more about the mindset than about the mileage. You already have the mileage. What you have to have is the mindset. You in particular would need to let go of your need to over-analyze everything. Just run. Find a race that excites you and run it. It's that simple.

ultra spirit wrote:I agree with this. I did not train to run an 80 mile race. I trained to re-fuel and keep going. In the middle of the race, its one foot at a time or one gel per hour or pee now. thats about it.

Maybe you should just take the Jenn Shelton approach and show up at some random race, hung over and wearing a bikini. I'm thinking not much thinking goes into those decisions.Kristen wrote:(sadly, there is no NOT over-analyzing stuff in my case, but I'm trying *really hard* to keep it in check)
