Canadian Death Race 2010 - Solo Finish

Postby Albertatraildog » Thu Aug 05, 2010 8:58 pm

Happy to report back that I successfully completed the Death Race once again this year.
The race was every bit as challenging as I remember it from 2006.
Here are a few snaps for those interested.

This is from leg 1, around the village of Grande Cache.
Image

Leg two is second most difficult leg, taking you up both Flood Mountain and then Grande Mountain.
Image

Leg 3 is a gorgeous run along the Smokey River.
Image

Leg 4 is the easily the most difficult, up Mount Hamel.
Image

And finally the finish line after Leg 5.

Beautiful pics. I'm not sure I could stay awake for 19.5 hours these days, much less trudge through that kind of terrain.

It was warm, but the course was reasonably dry and footing good. Still, 125km and 17,000 ft of climb is a long way to go! I'm feeling pretty good already though. No blisters, aches or pains, nada. Hal Koerner won the race in a new course record 12:45:38. Incredible. Jack was taken off from the summit of Hamel in a stretcher.

Congratulations on finishing. You look very familiar in the pics, I think we attended a couple meetings together in 2006 in Edmonton before you did that race. I registered with a relay but suffered a hamstring tear during my training for that race and couldn't participate.

Wow Albertatraildog , great pics and an ever more amazing time. I understand that only 1 in 3 solo participants finish! What was the #1 factor in the DNFs?

It was his back again. I passed him on the way up Hamel and he was barely moving. He said he tried to keep going on Robaxiset, but by the time he summitted Hamel, he had to be taken off the mountain. But no matter what happened on this race, Jack's place in CDR history is cemented.

Congrats on finishing! You look like you had a great race. Well done!

A lot of people I know DNF-ed. It's a tough course, especially if you live in SW Ontario.

Thanks for posting the shots, each one is worth more than a thousand words.

Good question. It was warm this year, so that may of had something to do with the DNFs, but with 149/418 soloists finishing this year's numbers are better than average.
No doubt some of those who dropped out after only completing one leg were people who were unable to get into the relay and only ever wanted to do a single leg.
There were a lot of folks, including a lot of relay teams who timed out on leg three. There was a bit of a controversy this year as the advertised 7:30pm cut off was changed by the RD to 7:00pm. The vast majority of people had no idea of the change. For those hugging the cut-off time, this put them over the line. There are a LOT of folks discussing this online who are quite upset.
Dehydration hit several folks who I ran across who had nothing to drink in the middle of a leg. There were fewer water sources along the way this year due to it being so dry.
Lack of calories hit many I am sure. I became extremely nausious on Mt Hamel and never ate much after that.
Sodium / electrolyte deficiency is a pretty guaranteed way to come down with cramping and mental funk. I took Succeed S!Caps every hour, which I think helped a lot.
There is a lot to deal with during a race this epic. What it really comes down to more than anything else is "attitude". You can push through a lot of pain and issues along the way if you stay 100% positive that you will succeed. The mind is usually more responsible for DNFs than is the body.

I think the biggest factor is undertraining, especially for the terrain of the course. A lot of people who do that race are in Edmonton where the only hills are the river valley, and there are also a lot of inexperienced runners or runners who don't run regularly enough who do the race because it sounds cool. If you can run downhill, it is a good race for you. The race is not hard compared to most 100 milers for example, but some people think it is just because of the name. Its more of a marketing gimmick than anything. Not that its not a tough race though, just saying that almost every trail race is tough in some way.

The part I found worst, aside from the fact I couldn't walk or even get out of a car when I did it - I had really bad SI joint inflammation among other hip issues - was that there is lots of quad trails which mean basically your either running on a hump or in a rut. Also the year I did it there had been rain for several days, and it rained during the race, and the mud there turns into sticky clay when its wet and there was mud puddles so big you had to run through them and you had no idea what the footing was like under the water, especially in the dark. Then you had a pound of clay on each foot at all times. But basically the key is probably the downhill, people who stop themselves with every step will really trash their quads. There are also some long flat stretches, but it seems overall the course is more down than up. I am much stronger at downhill running than uphill running, and I found myself walking downhill towards the end, although that was probably more to do with my pre-existing injuries.
