Haliburton 2011
With Limberlost and Dirty Girls done, now there's one quick ITT on the Bruce Trail and next station... HALIBURTON!
The viking and I were up at the first training run in mid-July. We fed the deer flies and ran 30k. The trails were in awesome shape. 2011 should be a great year, unlike last year's blisterfest. There's talk of having a detour around that flooded piece of trail along the beaver pond and the black bears have all agreed to go on holiday and leave the Normac loop for us to enjoy. Kidding. They'll be out there waiting for tired, newbie 50 milers and 100 milers and will surely chase them all the way to the finish.
So, without further ado, who's in?

Re: Haliburton 2011
It saddens me to miss it this year, but it is the same day as my son's 18th birthday. Haliburton happens every year; 18th birthday is once in a life time. I am very envious, with the dry summer we've had the course will be in amazing shape. Have a great time everyone, I'll be thinking of you.

C'mon Strider, what better way to celebrate and bond with your DS' on his 18th b-day then to run a 100-miler together ..

Re: Haliburton 2011
Ultraqueenga you are correct I was planning on the 50 miler but the newbe gjmon and fellow Saugeen Tri Club Member and I are going to run together. Hands down the most fun I have had running this year was running Mississuaugau with a half a dozen or so Tri Club members. A little over half way gjmon broke away from the pack followed closely by Leanne , both running thier first full. Leanne told me as we were running that she wanted to go for a 3:45 but she didn't have anyone to go out with so I said "lets go". We went from near 6:00Ks to pulling 5:20Ks finishing with a huge negative split in just around 4hours. I really like to tell that story! On a not so good note I think I may be working that weekend and I am not sure what my options are yet so I may not be able to do Hali after all ... have to figure it out next week when I return from a 2 week vacation.
Annelizabeth is after points in the Trail Series. Anne , I believe that only your top 5 performances go towards the points series so if you have 5 in then go for the 50K at Hali, you are ready and both you and gjmon would do quite well.

Planning to run Haliburton this year, but won't fully commit until after TransRockies and see how my body recovers.
Really missed not being able to run last year due to injury. The next best thing was pacing my friend Keith Iskiw for his last 25miles though. I also benefitted greatly the year before from awesome pacing by Strider. I posted the headings 'Available to Pace' and 'Pacing' above as I know a number of people are looking for pacers. Pacing is a win-win situation. The runner gets some much needed support and encouragement, and the pacer gets to enjoy the event from a different perspective. Also a great opportunity for people to consider pacing if they are thinking of moving up in distance and gaining some valuable experience.

Had a nice training run at Haliburton on Saturday with Maryka and others. The course is much drier than last year and there is an alternative route that winds around the section flooded last year by the beaver dam. While this detour will keep your feet dry, it does add a bit more climbing. Given that there's not much flooding at this point, we may be missing the muddy trail route by our third or fourth pass.
The trails are much more lush than last year, so you will want to take extra care when running through some areas. The two sections with all the logs underneath can be particularly hazardous as you can't really see them anymore. As well, there is another hilly section that has a number of holes/gaps that are difficult to see due to vegetation. For the most part, you can just barrel on through the course, but when in doubt, it doesn't hurt to slow down a bit and see where you're placing your feet.
We didn't encounter any bears on Saturday, but we did see a moose.

That would be great Hezzy, even if he only feels up to the last 20 or 30 ,something to keep me going in the low spot and take my mind off the miles.

No Haliburton for me this year I am working nights. Plan B is to follow everyone’s progress but I know that not much gets out of the Forest. Does anyone know any avid “Tweeters” that may be sending updates? Good luck and have fun.
