Indoor Ultra for 2012 - Excited to see it back

Postby cbaker1 » Wed Sep 28, 2011 7:08 am

Scott and his team did a great job at the Indoor Ultra last year at York University. I noticed their website is updated with the 2012 details. It will only be 6 hours, marathon or 30km. (Was 8 hours last year) I was worried it might not return as I thought participation was low.

If you like running in circles for hours, I would recommend this one. It was a miserable day to run outside in 2011 so I look forward to a long run indoors in January. I have the RnR Arizona the next weekend so I may only do the marathon, but still leaning towards the 6 hour. Will make my decision in the next few weeks and register.

I'm half interested in this! What, in your opinion, were the major challenges with running in an event like this?

I'm thinking any leg issues from running on an indoor track for so long etc? Running indoors, monotony of running laps etc

Every two hours, we switched directions on the track. We ran in Lane 6 so it was dead flat. I didnt have any problems. Some people said the air was very dry but it didnt bother me.

Mentally I guess you have to overcome the fact that you are running in circles for 6 hours. I had no issues, as I looked at the positives. No wind, snow or other outside conditions. You passed the aid station and your drop back every 250 meters and there were always people around to chat. Washrooms are just off the track too.

Last year, the music played was not my type at all. I didnt have my iPod so that bugged me a bit. This year they are asking for your top 3 songs to hear while you run when you sign-up. I suspect they will try to play them.
It sounds like there may be food afterwards this year as I heard that was one complaint last year. No meal afterwards for the 8 hour runners. I think very little needs to be improved from last year and i really had a great time.

You know I think it is worth the 2.5hr drive to do in January. Lets hope there isn't a snow storm.

Sounds good... may just be worth keeping the fitness up for over the winter period!

Indoor Ultra for 2012 - Excited to see it back

Postby Jwolf » Fri Sep 30, 2011 11:18 am

I actually love running on the track. I'd do this if there was one around here. Not 6 hours, but I'd do 30k in about 3 hours :).

The viking and I helped out at the indoor ultra last year and would have done it again this year, but we have other commitments this weekend. Last year's event was a blast!
If you're into track running and don't mind a bit of hip joint and IT band discomfort, this is a great event in the middle of coldest, darkest winter. They reduced it from 8hrs to 6hrs (probably due to track/facility rental issues).

Good luck to everyone running it. May the best IT band win! ;)

I cant say my IT band hurt after last year. I really liked running on the track and thought it was easier on my legs than on the road.

I am back this weekend for the marathon. I have the RnR Arizonia marathon next weekend and my training isnt as consistant (and I figured it wouldnt be due to the holidays) so I am starting the year off with just the marathon and not the 6 hour event.

I signed up today - it took a while for me to clue in that my GPS won't work indoor.

Any pacing tips? Of course, I'll know my goal spit for the 232.49m track and will check my split with a stopwatch every few laps. But are there any onsite tools for an indoor race that I may not be thinking of?

Thanks!

I am going to pace by feel. Easy to moderate pace and take what I get.

I really enjoyed this race last year and I'll be back! It'll be a nice reprieve from the cold before Beast of Burden 100 miler in two weeks.

Good luck to all at the race! Curly is in the 6 hour. I have to work tomorrow, so I'll be cheering you on as I drive 80+ MDX/CRV/ZDX/Civics! Yeah, I'm supporting production by racing (I mean driving) cars.

That was a tough race today. Nice to meet some Running Mania people out there today.

I started cramping at 4 hours and that made for a tough final 2 hours. Two marathons/ultras in six days, time to rest up the legs, at least until the Beast 50 miler in two weeks.

It was a great day and wonderful to see so many maniacs this year! The RDs really paid attention to the feedback from last year, resulting in many improvements, including good music, better food, nice race shirts, etc. And after the race, they made sure to solicit everyone's feedback so I know it will only continue to get better each year. Congrats to everyone involved!
