Day 1 in the books...

Good morning everyone

Day 1 went well. Rainy conditions were a factor throughout the day and made the rock beaches in the Tobermory area slippery. Thanks to Wanda and Manuel for sharing stories and laughter on the tails. Through the moto - slow & steady - we completed the 84.8km day in 15hr 5min.

Thanks for everyone's support and kind thoughts.

Char

Great start!

She's making good progress... Days 2 and 3 went well. I hope the rain holds off and thankfully it's not crazy hot.

Bad news. Quoted from Barb Campbell on Facebook

Sadly, Charlotte Vasarhelyi has been forced to halt her Bruce Trail record attempt after seeking medical advice related to severe hamstring strain. Her injury was likely triggered by the slick trail conditions on the rugged, rocky Tobermory-Wiarton section after Friday's heavy rains. She completed close to 300 km in 4 days and is making the smart - but very difficult - decision to let her body heal so she can keep running on trails for many years to come. Well done, Charlotte. You are inspiring when you succeed - and also when things don't go your way.

"I just hope that people look at it and say, 'Hey if this yahoo can do it, then I can do it too.' That'd be cool if people thought that. It's just a matter of putting the miles in and working. It's not so much how much talent you have. I hope." - Brian Sell.

I feel for Charlotte, but am impressed that she made the decision to stop. Char put a tremendous amount of effort into the preparation, details and logistics. I have seen firsthand that she can handle running with pain, so I expect the decision was more to do with her running carreer. Best of luck in the future, Char!

I agree! It can be so hard even at my super slow and extremely amateur level to stop when I have committed time and some money - for her to do it at her level is a great example.

Too bad... what an ambitious challenge.

Any news on how she is doing? Here's to a speedy - and complete recovery...
Lesson one: "Don't fight the trail - take what it gives you. If you have a choice between one step or two between rocks, take three".

Lesson two: "Think Easy, Light, Smooth and Fast." You start with easy, because if that's all you get, that's not so bad.

Char had an MRI recently but I believe at this point, the exact issue is not known. Char is hoping to be given the green light to start training again. She is active, but I'm not sure if running is part of her current activities.

I'm facing a 6 week hiatus after my July 17 surgery for a torn cartilage in my left knee... Running can be tough, especially when ramping up for that long race, but NOT running can be tougher!

Let's send good vibes to Charlotte!
