Grand 2 Grand Ultra

Postby ngcaper » Fri Apr 04, 2014 4:16 pm

Sooooooo I attended the I2P fund raiser and silent auction last night. I put a bid on an entry for the race thinking there's no chance I'll win for this price...well I won, so am now a 2014 registrant for G2G...thankfully Ray and Mike (finisher from last year) came over straight away and offered to help but holy s**t I didn't expect to be doing this in 2014. Unsupported 7 stages in the desert....eek.

I don't really know what G2G stands for but it sounds like a very cool (or hot) race to do. 8)
Congratulations, can't wait to see how the training goes.

The race looks spectacular....Grand Canyon, Grand Staircase and Zion are awesome. As for running the whole 273K unsupported in 169 days from now..well, we know what your training plans are going to look like for the next while!!

It does look spectacular, and I love that area of the SW States. Nick I thought the training for Vermont was tough BTW it is, now I get to carry a 20lb sack in training.

If nothing else I'll get a good tan, and lose a few extra lbs this summer. Its only April and I'm nervous. Though if I don't try I'll never know what I'm capable of. That said my wife now officially thinks I'm nuts and I tend to believe her.

Your wife is correct, LOL :)

Regardless of how it goes, it sounds like a simply awesome adventure. No way you'll be able to sit back 30 years from now and not smile thinking about it. That's what it's all about!

Epic!!!

The 20 pound pack will only feel like 18 pounds with all the scenery!

1. I have no idea how you will carry enough food to run 6 days.
2. scenery is great. I suppose some of those areas are hard to access except if you are part of the race?
3. very pricey considering you are bringing all your own supplies. But you won it for free; of course I'd go under that circumstance.
4. Looks like being a rude tent mate will get you a penalty.... Careful! :naughty:

Well life has gotten a little simpler. I asked could I defer my entry to 2015, and was granted it. I had not been training for a stage race, nor had it even been on my mind until I won this. The G2G team is a great group and agreed it would be much better if there was no 100m race in the way, and my focus could be on stage racing. The consensus is I'd enjoy it more, have a greater opportunity for success, and have less stress this summer. That and the gear required to stage race is expensive...nice to not have to drop 000's all at once and now can look for sales.

Because I need something after Vermont to look forward to I registered for the Virgil Crest 50miler...this is supposed to be a brutal hard race on its own and it coincidentally is the same weekend the G2G starts.

So 2014 is set:

ATB: Done
NCR Marathon (my first and last large road marathon I hope)
Vermont 100
Virgil Crest 50

Should be a fun summer...and I'm already looking forward to no running in Oct :?

Good plan and nice to see the G2G folks being flexible.

Agreed Nick...it didn't even take any begging or pushing. I started the conversation with I have two questions, and the response was, "is question 1 can you defer to 2015, if so yes" so I withdrew question #2 as it was assuming the deferral was going to be a no. :)

I'm certain it has to do with winning the entry at a charity event in April...if it was an all out purchase and registration it would be tougher to defer as I can't see it being cheap to host a race like this considering the medical, vehicle, and even permit support required. That and they have to dedicated 100% of their week to the race as well + the peripheral work we don't see.

So I'm happy...and have an ambitious schedule this year none-the-less.

WOW -- that is absolutely amazing -- G2G is on my bucket list as well, but I will likely have to wait until I retire (or at least stop adding 100 milers to my roster!! )

Can't wait to follow along with your training!!

May to Sept is a long gap...you can do it, you'd be sufficiently recovered and trained by then.

Except that I have another 100-miler planned for Jan, and another for Aug -- I think 3 in that timeframe is enough -- my turn will come!! :D
