arm warmers??

Postby ultraslacker » Wed Apr 07, 2010 11:53 am

I'm thinking about picking up a pair of arm warmers... for cool, wet mornings and early race times...

defeet has some wool cycling ones that look toasty.

who has arm warmers, and what do you recommend?

There's not much difference between types IMO.

I have ones from Lulu (given to me by an awesome maniac) and they have the little flip things for your hands to cover. Otherwise, the other pairs we have are Sugoi (from NYC marathon). also Dave got a pair of awesome shebeest ones (yes, they're for women) that are leopard print.

There are some very cool tattoo looking ones.

so, yes. I go for design. not function - but they're all pretty much the same in regards to function IMO!

you can also get some very economical plain boring black ones from MEC.

I've got 3 or 4 sets. They work even better than I thought they would, to be honest. I really like the ones made by Sugoi. Biggest recommendation is try them on and make sure they are snug from top to bottom. If there are any parts that are even a little loose at all, they are too big for you and you need to go a size down. They are very, very snug when the fit properly and take some getting used to, but they really do keep your arms nice and cosy warm.

oh! and I forgot about the skulls and crossbones ones we also picked up at the PEC marathon expo - again, sugoi.

and now, as I read this. I think we have 5 pairs between 2 people. we have a problem.

I bought a bunch for when I had my PICC line. The Sugoi tattoo ones are really, really cool but they were expensive. The shebeest ones were the lightest and a bit cheaper. The best pair for running I have though are the Lulu ones (the most expensive I think). Having those cuffins and thumb holes, and the elastic at the top was the best and most flexible. The coolest one (I can't remember the brand name) I gave as a gift. I wore them in the fall so I could run with the line and they worked real well. I haven't worn them this spring yet because we've gone from winter to summer real fast. I loved them with a s/s shirt.

A pair of cut off sleeves from a tight top would be awesome as a toss off during a race.

thanks! I love the idea of the cuffins, so maybe I will check out the lulu ones. It would have come in handy last week when my hands and arms were frozen!

I have two sets: arm warmers from MEC ($15) made of the same material that tights are made from; and arm coolers (in white), that are much thinner. I bought them in Europe, but I'm sure you can get them here. They are more lightweight and are good to keep the sun off my arms, especially in the spring when you can get burned if you forgot your sunscreen!

lol I don't wear sunscreen and it's VERY rare for me to burn, so I'm not worried about that side.

I have the basic MEC ones that La mentioned as well as a pair of white ones from Run Girl Run (they have Run Girl Run in pink & reflective on them as well as awesome pockets on the upper arm for key/iPod.

What I really want.. a pair of Moeben's.

Perhaps the Butterfly or Daisy pattern.

That I know of, yes.

They come from the cycling world, where hand covers would be pretty useless. But for running, they would come in handy.

I've always been one to just wear a long sleeve shirt, over a short sleeve, and take the long sleeves off at some point. But, after many many North Shore trail runs where my core was warm but my arms got wet and cold, I finally bought some arm warmers last fall, I think it was. Love 'em. Wasn't sure I would, so I just grabbed the first $15 pair I found at MEC. They're a bit fuzzy on the inside, so warmer than some others I've seen. I am thinking about getting a ligther pair.

I have a lulu pair and a pearl izumi pair. I like them both for different reasons.

I have a friend who bought cheap wool tube socks and cut off the toes :)

ha, you could just cut a hole in them and use the toes for hand warmers.

Framboisine uses a shrug. She said the best thing was if you wanted to take it off you could tie it around your waist instead of trying ti stuff arm warmers somewhere.

on any run where I might need arm warmers, I'm also wearing my hydration pack... I was thinking that arm warmers would take up less space than an extra top, which is how I've historically done it.

I have a sugoi pair in black. They were not expensive - cheaper then their tatoo ones. I love them though they could be a bit longer for me. I have looked at the Lulu ones but not tried them on. Figure I don't really need to spend the money! I like that I can take them off and if I don't have pockets but do have a water belt (frequent in spring and fall when it is warmer out but I start off early) I just pull one sleeve inside of the other and then tie them around the water belt. They are now one of my favourite pieces of 'equipment.' I have even worn them a couple of times under a jacket with short sleeves. Then I can take my 'sleeves' off as I warm up and be comfortable without freezing to start the run or having to carry a long sleeve shirt or heavier jacket.

Robena makes a shrug type of thing as well that works similarly but has a bit of a back on it kind of like a bolero jacket.
