Water on the Screen of my Garmin
Water on the Screen of my Garmin
Running home from work the other day I got caught in heavy rain and now have a spot of water under the screen of my Garmin Forerunner 305. Has anyone has this happen before? I am curious to know if it will just dry up and keep working or if it will eventually cause damage to it so that it no longer works properly.

Re: Water on the Screen of my Garmin
I'm thinking it could go either way. My wife's iPod got some condensation underneath the screen and after a couple of days in a bag of rice, it now works fine. It took a while for all of the moisture to get out though. My iPod, on the other hand, had the same thing happen and while it works, the LCD screen is shot (I can only barely make out images in certain light conditions).
Since the Garmin is made for outdoors use, I would think that you'll be okay and that it will just take time. I've had condensation underneath the screens of previous fish finders that I've had and they all continued to work. I would think that most things made for outdoors use should be more robust in those regards. Might not hurt to just let it dry out for a few days before using it though.

Re: Water on the Screen of my Garmin
There is a magic formula for recovering water logged, but working tech equipment. My brother told me about it and it worked. I soaked a camera while on holiday once...I let it "air dry" for days but it never seemed to work as well. My brother suggested putting it in a food dehydrator for 24hrs as it's not as hot as other methods, and evaporates completely.
It worked...and I've saved that trick and used it again on a Ipod for instance.

I had it happen to my 205. It did eventually dry up and kept on working, and I never stopped using it even with water under the glass. It think it is a busted seal some place. The beep got a little "washed out" after a few more "floods". Ended up using it for dry day runs after a while.

Yup. Happened to my 305, too. Mine would take days to dry out, but would never go away completely (always left a tiny spot behind). It continued to work, but in the last little while the buttons on the side started to go (don't know if that was related, or just one more thing on it that wore out). It lost its beeping capability farily early on (< 1yr old).

I've dried out a 205 that I wore in a downpour (which is still working, years later) and a ipod shuffle that went through the washing machine in my pocket in a bag of rice. I put them in and left them for a week, and have never had any issues.

+1 on the bag of rice. I've salvaged a cell phone and some talking Thomas the Trains that ended up in the bath tub using a bag of rice.
