Garmin 920xt...

Postby Jwolf » Mon Sep 22, 2014 6:54 pm

It's coming. :)

Not officially announced yet, but there have been some leaks. My friend mike got some screen shots of the specs when RoadRunnerSports listed it on their page and then later took it down:

Five hundred dollars for a watch. That's something.

Yeah, it's pretty pricey. But it is mighty nice.

Mike's exaggerating. The price is actually $499.99.

Any way you cut it, it is a lot of coin. How many of the new features would the average person use regularly?

It has the same features as the 910xt, and I use all the major features (some of the extra software stuff is irrelevant).

What it has extra is the Bluetooth connectivity-- which is what I would love to have. Not so much for smartwatch notifications (although that would be cool while running) but also for later upload of data directly to my phone.

To me this is way more desirable than any of the cell phone company smartwatches on the market, including the recently announced Apple Watch.

It also has "drill" mode for swimming which will help make pool swim distances more accurate.

We shall see what the battery life will be like, though.

And it's here:

http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/10/fr92 ... tails.html

It looks like it will NOT support BTLE accessories, but you can transfer data by BTLE.

Also, not sure about whether they allow bigger pool lengths.

eta: According to Ray it does allow pool lengths up to 150m/y. :) That means I need one before next summer. ;)

A little thinner than my F2. Had this come out 6 months ago I would have bought one... now I'm good.

Not sure I feel the colours. Like the all black of my watch. Easier to wear with a suit :)

But it does make my watch feel bulky
Which is one of the reasons why I upgraded from the 910. That and the day watch feature.

Plus I've finally gotten used to the quirks of a non-forerunner watch. It'd be too easy for me to use a running designed watch.

The other thing that makes this watch interesting is you can wear it as daily activity tracker (like an enhanced FitBit). In non-GPS mode the battery supposedly last a month.

I would hold off buying the 920XT for a while in order to see what the user feedback is like.

From my reading, the 910XT is a good watch and uses the SirfStar IV GPS chipset. There have been a lot of concerns expressed on the web about Garmin's newer watches, namely the FR220, FR620 etc., because they use the MediaTek GPS chipset. There have been other issues as well, such as random reboots resulting in lost data. Although I liked a lot about the FR620, I returned it after having reboots on two consecutive runs.

There's been no problems for me using the chipset in the F2.

I love trolling the forums there (garmin forums) where the devout point to fellrnr as a god and the only voice that these devices suck. And then I show them my maps.

Mine have been 99.9999% accurate, and its one of two reason why I upgraded from the 910 (the other being how lousy it was as a day watch).

However I do get jealous with how complicated actually using the F2 as a sports watch sometimes like tonight when I'm doing laps and intervals. The fenix series =/= the forerunner series.

I think I'll wait for the successor to the 620.

This is probably where you'll want to do your research:

Note I did by my F2 while others were still complaining and as I said no issues - but I did wait about a month longer than when I first wanted it (plus waited til a local store had one in stock and on sale).

As I said above, I liked my FR620 for a lot of reasons even though the GPS was a bit flakey now and then. I was prepared to live with the watch's shortcomings but when it crashed on me two times in a row in spite of my doing all the latest firmware updates, I called it quits.

I'm really pleased than your Garmin is working out for you.
