Return to Running after Pleurisy & Partial Lung Collapse?
Re: Return to Running after Pleurisy & Partial Lung Collapse?
I just came across this thread now. Kim I'm so sorry to hear about your health concerns and that your marathon plans got derailed. I can just imagine how frustrating it must be for you. Samantha had very good advice, let your body fully recover now and concentrate on getting better. There will be other races and you will be back out there, but right now your focus should be on taking care of yourself. Hang in there and take this opportunity to read some really good books or watch some great movies, guilt free because you're supposed to rest & relax

Re: Return to Running after Pleurisy & Partial Lung Collapse?
Thanks everyone - your caring words and support mean so much to me. I really appreciate it.
I had my referral appt with the respirologist at 4 pm yesterday. When I arrived, they informed me that they were over 2 hours behind and that my appointment would take 2 hours. They told me that I could have the breathing tests done and then come back for another appt with the doctor. When I said that I would wait, they booked me in for the follow-up with the doctor this morning. They did 30 mins of breathing tests yesterday and my appt this morning with the dr is @ 8:45 so I'm heading out soon. I'm praying for some good news. I'll let you know.
Hugs back to everyone and thank you SOOOO much!

It's 8:45am - so I hope you're not getting caught in another wait, but instead are ushered in to see the Doctor.

Re: Return to Running after Pleurisy & Partial Lung Collapse?
latest update from the emails and conversations I have had with her so far this morning.
Seen Doctor, gone for more xRays, back to Doctor, and now off for another test. Appointment for a Bronchial Scope (or something like that) next Monday too. Funny is that all the nurses and techs knew she was "the runner who missed her Marathon" - giving her the special treatment I'm sure.

Off for a Ventilation/Perfusion scan (V/Q lung scan) now. Doctor thinks it is strange she is still having the pains.

This coupled with the broncoscope are really good - ideally the doc should be able to rule out the bac vs viral angle, and hopefully spot anything else in the lungs. I wonder if she's still suffering from inflammation in the pleura, and the first round of meds did not fully treat. At least they are giving her great care, and she's being send for all the tests right away - versus a lengthy "hope it resolves itself" wait.
to you both

MrsStrider wrote:Thanks everyone! I really appreciate everyone's comments and support. I'm feeling very discouraged.
It was 3 weeks ago yesterday when the pain started and I still have pain and can hardly do anything. I started back to work last week and by the end of the day, I'm absolutely exhausted. Tuesday night, I had a relapse of very bad pain and then again during the day yesterday, but today wasn't as bad. I'm just baffled that I went from completing a full marathon training program and primed to run to not being able to anything. I just can't believe that the recovery is this long.
Feeling very frustrated. My body aches from sitting. I'd much rather it hurt from good, solid training.
Okay, I"m done whining and I'll try to be positive now. Thank you ALL!
Lungs take a long time. and it's perfectly normal to be that exhausted. After my PE I couldn't walk from the parking lot to the grocery store door. I'm not kidding.I could barely stand in line at the lab when I went to get blood tests. I hated it when there was a line up.
I was in the hospital for a month (other complications as well ) and once I got out I slept constantly for about 2 months.
I was off work for 4 months and I still found it a struggle to get through the day after I went back.
Just listen to your body. I know it's frustrating for you but it's telling you it's tired for a reason. And yes the recovery will take a while - it's not like it is on TV where people bounce back right away. It takes time.
Re: Return to Running after Pleurisy & Partial Lung Collapse?
Just catching up on all this.
Wishing you the best, Kim. Glad to hear that the doctor is being aggressive with the testing to figure out why you're still having pain.

Re: Return to Running after Pleurisy & Partial Lung Collapse?
Thanks SO much everyone!!! You're all so awesome and making me smile. I really appreciate everyone's comments and support.
Wow.... that was a very LONG day. I started with the doctor @ 8:45 am and finally finished up close to 3 pm:
Basically, the respirologist diagnosed me as having a severe pneumonia with pleural effusion and partial lung collapge. He said it may have been caused by aspiring something into my lungs and could have happened during routine dental including cleaning. I says pardon? How weird is that? Bad luck much? It will take time to heal, but I can start to resume more activitiy such as yoga and I can try (TRY) to run and see how much pain I'm in. Okay, that's awesome news!!! He said that pain will be my guide. Yup, we'll see. It still hurts to yawn so not sure about running, but I'll certainly try to run a few steps.
Now, I'm anxious for Nov. 10th. Baby steps. Yeah!
Hugs & thanks everyone.
Wow.... that was a very LONG day. I started with the doctor @ 8:45 am and finally finished up close to 3 pm:
- * Met with the respirologist who reviewed my initial hospital tests and listened to my story and reviewed results of breathing tests which were withint the normal range, but on the low side which apparently shows progress
* Sent me to the Civic hospital for lung x-rays
* Back to respirologist - x-rays are fine, but they were fine originally and only the CT Scan showed the pleural effusion, but they don't want to repeat CT Scan - too much radiation
* Discussed why I still have so much pain.... back to the hospital for a VQ lung scan with MAA - radiactive stuff
* Back to respirologist - VQ lung scan shows no blood clot
* Scheduled for bronchoscopy on Monday at the Civic Hospital - results appt booked for Nov. 10th

Hey Kim,
thanks for the update!
Dental check-ups can be odd that way. I have a heart murmur and used to have to take drugs before they'd open my mouth. Something about off-setting the possibility of stuff going into the body. I don't take the stuff anymore, not sure why

Heart murmurs are often indicative of some sort of heart defect/lesion (mostly benign), but during dental cleaning, bacteria gets into the blood stream and the heart can become prone to bacterial endocarditis. This is the reason for the preventative antibiotics. The risk has now been determined to be so low that this practice has been stopped in most cases.
