Grade 2 Achilles Tendinopathy
At a recent massage therapy appointment my MT was preparing to work on my Achilles Tendon - it's been an ongoing pain for me and after a three year hiatus it's back..or so I thought.
When she went to work on it she stopped and said that she didn't think it was the tendon that was giving me grief...She asked if I would agree to a consult with one of the other practitioners...They both looked at it and said that they are pretty sure it is a ganglion cyst (usually they appear on the wrist or top of the foot) because my tendon was supple (not tight like you'd see with tendonitis) and that the pain I was feeling was more localized...
Good news is that they tend to go away on their own...Bad news...they can come back at any time...
Sooo they advised that if it doesn't get better in a week, or if it suddenly gets worse, to go to the local sports therapy walk in and they will drain it (gahhhhh!) and can inject with cortisone to prevent a recurrence.
Anyone had this or heard of it being done?

Re: Ganglion Cyst - Foot
A friend had one on her wrist, but it went away on it's own. Sorry that I can't provide any help.
Re: Ganglion Cyst - Foot
I had one many years ago when I was an avid downhill skiier (out on the hills about 4 times a week...those were the days! )
It was on the top of my foot...which made wearing my ski boots a little painful at times.
This was about 30 years ago...it did go away on it's own...and I've never had once since.
Bonne chance!

Re: Ganglion Cyst - Foot
I have a client who gets them in the joints of her index finger and thumbs. She has to get them drained once in a while, and they don't seem to be an issue for her, aside from the fact she doesn't come to the gym for a week or so as she can't grip anything.

I had one on my wrist - it's gone now, took a little while (weeks, not months).
I think they used to call these "Bible Bump" or something like that because they would sometimes try to get rid of them by bashing them with a large, hardcover book (bible in most households).

Yes exactly...that's what my RMT said and they actually used a bible on the one she had on her wrist...

Ok this thing is not getting better...walking to work today was uncomfortable. I will be stopping by the clinic tonight after work and hope that they can figure it out and get me some relief...

My dad had one of these on the back of his wrist, and, as it did not go away on its own after a couple of years, he had it drained. We used to joke around with him though, and suggested he he just give it a good whack with a hammer. I never heard of the Bible technique.

Re: Ganglion Cyst - Foot
So I will consider the bible trick if I ever get one if these cysts... Yeah.. That's not what my lump is...
I saw the sports medicine dr today and turns out this is a Grade 2 Achilles Tendinopathy.
Good news - I have a diagnosis...
Bad news - no running for 3-6 months ( I want to cry) along with physio and wearing a "boot" at night. Follow-up appointment in 6 weeks...

You will be able to find things you can do. It is an exercise in patience, no doubt.
Be careful on the bike though because that can also aggravate a cranky Achilles. Until the weather is better you can try out the stationary bikes or spin bikes at a gym.
Good luck!

Re: Ganglion Cyst - Foot
Yes .. The dr said to use the mid foot for pedalling and not the forefoot ... So I'll have to replace my clips with platforms.

It may be a long tunnel but there is light at the end of it. If you get impatient, grasshopper, you could end up taking twice as long to get back.
And I think Mein Kampf works as well as The Bible but you have to scream loudly in German as you smack the cyst.
