Starting again, and dragging family along with me.

Postby Beerslinger » Mon Aug 23, 2010 10:28 am

So, I feel after two years off, with multiple restarts, that it was time to do it properly.

In the past I've always gone out and ran a pace that I can hold over 4 -5 k, even after along time off. Of course my knee starts to hurt, and I wind up taking a big chunk of time off again.

This time I've talked to my wife (non-energetic non-runner) into coming along with me. We're in the second week, and she's loving it. She's the one who's dragging me out the door on our running days. So far no knee pain, and feeling great.

We both feel that the running actually brings us closer on the days we go, almost like it's our private little date when our hectic life won't allow us time for a traditional date.

I'll try to keep up a running post as we progress along.

We did 6 repeats of 1:30 run 2:00 walk, covering 2.24k, not counting warm up and cool down walking. It was hard for her but we got through it. We've even found a local (250 K away) 5k that we're going to sign up for since our training program ends on that day.

There is always the Cabot Trail Relay Race. It's a bit farther than 250k but you've done it before! :)

Do you want the plan I'm using? My wife is finding it challenging, but fun. She's never been an excerciser, not even liking to go for walks, so it's very beginner friendly.

Run day tomorrow... :)

We've been set back a week due to sickness, but we're still battling through. We did 6 repeats of 1:30 run/ 2:00 walk. Susan (wife) had a hard time today, as she's been sick, and just got over it. She muscled through it though, and finished strong. I've havn't been so proud of her since our son was born. :)

We wound up skipping a day on our week 2, as it was a repeat week after we had a setback halfway through last week. That sounded stupid, lets just say we repeated a week, but jumped ahead a day.
We did 1:30/1:30/3:00/3:00 X2 Walk/Run. It was great, with Susan going all out the last 20 seconds of the final run repeat. She is getting some stiffness in her outer calf and the front of her shin the last two times. I looked it up on google, and the nearest thing I could find was Anterior Shinsplints. The website recommended Massage, Ice, and Stretching. It also recommended cutting back on the mileage, which is pretty hard, considering we're just starting. Maybe just repeat week 1 for a few more days.

Good idea. Also, does she wear flat shoes? I had a real problem last year with this, and finally put it down to wearing shoes with a heel. Had to strengthen the muscles...
