Really beginning
Really beginning
Hi, from a true newbie! No one on this site seems to have begun at as basic a level as I did, 10 months ago. I'm well into middle age and NEVER ran in my life. I began running 20 paces, then walking 20 paces, which I could only endure for 20 breathless minutes. I started because I didn't want to go on blood pressure medicine at this (relatively) early point in my life.
Why I stuck with it, when my progress was SO gradual as to be imperceptible, I'm not sure. I kept trying, thru rain, blizzards, injuries, stomach cramps, etc. A week ago, I accomplished my first goal: 30 minutes continuous running with no walking intervals. My next goal is a 5-K.
So here's to no blood pressure pills and perseverance!

While many of us here may not seem to be where you are, I know that many of us started the same basic level as you (or a variation of the theme). You are not alone! I too remember when I first ran for 30 minutes straight. Congrats, and keep up the good work!

Yep...what she said.
I started to run at age 50. Having been inactive for the better part of 2 decades.
I started...slow and easy...one step at a time.
I started to increase the distances I ran...again..slow and gradual.

Really beginning
Welcome and well done. 4 years ago, I started running so that I didn't have to start taking Lipitor (sic?).
We all start somewhere and you started for an excellent reason. Did you see a big change in your blood pressure?

Re: Really beginning
When I started I struggled to complete 2 straight minutes running, now I am running half-marathons in under 2 hours of continous running. We all have to start somewhere.
Good luck and enjoy the journey!

I knew you were all with me in spirit anyway...
Hence my name! Welcome and yes, may of us started where you did. When I finally made it to my first 3 minute run, one minute walk intervals, my husband seriously thought he might need to take me to the hospital because my breathing was so bad! 30 minutes is such a milestone. When I first started my only goal was to run 30 minutes. I thought if I could do that I'd be satisfied with that for ever. So...moral of the story is, be careful - it's addicting!

Re: Really beginning
I don't remember when the first time I ran 30 minutes straight was.
I do remember that when I started running I only did it on the gym treadmill or at night where nobody would see me.

Re: Really beginning
I don't know how to put a quote into this, but the thing about running only on the treadmill or at night gave me a chuckle. When I started, I didn't want anyone to see me either--I did laps around the fenced-in back yard for the first few weeks!

Re: Really beginning
On the post you want to quote, there are two buttons above the text and to the right of the title, one with an exclamation mark and one beside it that looks like |-> (sort of). The exclamation mark one is used to report objectionable content, the other one will start a reply with the post quoted. It simply puts the text inside a couple of tags like so:Avis wrote:I don't know how to put a quote into this
Code: Select all
quoted text is here
Edited to make the code part clearer

I was really confused for a second, until I remembered that you have different buttons than I do, lol.

Welcome to RM!
You will find lots of good advice, good humour, and support and encouragement here. There are some truly inspirational stories, and this forum, in a lot of ways, motivated me to run to achieve a healthy lifestyle. I, too, started very slowly, and NEVER thought I could do a 5-k run. This was less than a year ago. Now, I'm about a week away from doing my first 10k road race.
Congratulations on achieving your goal for 30-mins continuous running! I'm sure you can achieve the 5-k goal in less time than you think!

Look at me, including a quote! This is a great group of people who use this site, I find. And, I think, I hope, you're right--I'm suddenly getting close to that 5k. It seems my progress suddenly took a leap forward, after those miserable, dragging attempts at running all summer through that HEAT. I feel good about my efforts.
And congratulations to you, on your first 10k. You should be proud of yourself.
