New Runner :-)

I came across this forum last week and have been enjoying reading all of the different threads. I am a 45 yr old single mom and started running more seriously this past spring. I've run on and off since 2009 and have done three 5ks but always did a walk/run. This year I decided that I wanted to finally be able to run a full 5k and to then move into a 10k. I am on Week 8 of the C25k having completed my first 28 minute run last night. I am an incredibly slow runner but I do it for me. I feel so strong and healthy and ALIVE!

Just wanted to say "hi",
Tricia :-)

Welcome!

I'm sure you aren't alone in so many aspects of your intro! I'm a slow runner (it's not about speed for me though) who does walk/run.

I'm training for my first 1/2 marathon right now - something I never thought I'd say! :D

Glad to hear you have been inspired (I have too!) here.

Thanks!

I have the beginning of a thought on doing a 1/2 Marathon next spring. I say beginning because I simply cannot wrap my head around the fact that running has become such a thing for me!

I come from a family of marathoners....I always thought the "running gene" missed me! So glad that it hasn't! (slow or not! lol)

That can be tough if you (or your family) can't get their heads around the fact that you're a runner, regardless of the pace you run.

Welcome from the east end of TO.

Thanks La. The family is supportive and encouraging. It's me that's taking time to see the "runner".
I've lost 50 lbs in the last two years with more to go...so it's really a mental transformation along with the health & fitness.
But it's coming...it's definitely coming! :D

Welcome to RM Tricia!!

As someone who's gone through a recent transformation using just exercise (from 253lbs to 145lbs a year later), I completely understand the "mental" aspect. For me, learning to run was overcoming negative statements (by a gym teacher, no less) that hindered my desire to do anything athletic. I've come to realize it's not how fast or slow I run, how many push ups or reps I can do, but the fact I have confidence in myself to try anything in this new journey.

Keep at it, best wishes - and I look forward to reading about your progress!!

Thanks again for all the words of welcome and support!

abirdd - Yes, that's exactly the feeling isn't it? I must say that two years ago I was far too self-consious to even run along a path or road. Finally I decided that it really didn't matter what anyone thought. And that more than likely they were concentrating on their own run and not what *I* was doing. That was when I came to realize that most runners smile and nod at each other --- the support is everywhere.

Exactly - what matters is you are making changes for yourself.

I finished C25K on Friday and started a hybrid B210K this morning.
Working more towards running 60 minutes than anything else. I think 60 minutes will put me at approx the 8 k mark.
Slow and steady ;-)

What does the B in B210K stand for? Building? I've never heard of that program.

yep.. building to 10K.

I just found a sweet series on Pod-Runner as well.. 5k, 8k and 10K mixes with a change in tempo for the walk/run.... I have downloaded a few of them to see how they work out.

Oh, and WELCOME ABOARD! :ympeace:

Yes, building and I've also heard at times the term 'bridge" :-)

Thanks for the welcome Minitee!
