Hi Everyone,
Great fourms!
I want to start running (never ran before) I tried during a walk a few weeks ago.(I walk allot) It felt like someone was jumping up and down on my chest and I was totally out of breath........thought I was dying.......Is this normal? Im healthy and had the go ahead from my doc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

This is normal. For some reason many of us naturally try to go too fast when we first start. I would recommend starting with a run/walk program (like one minute run, one minute walk, repeat) until you gradually replace walking with running. There are some good "Learn to Run" programs out there including "Couch to 5K" and those in "Running Room's Book on Running" (or it's precursor "Running Start to Finish"). Here is an example to get an idea:

You can continue to walk on days in between.

I'll just add a +1 to Jwolf. I started my second attempt at serious running (after a 5+ year hiatus and two kids!) in January of this year. I was huffing through walk 2 run 1 at the very beginning, and just this week I ran 5k without walking at all. It does get better, but it takes time and patience. You can do it!

Welcome to RunningMania! And I'll go along with the above advice. I walked a lot too, before I began running, but alas, I found the walking did not prepare me for the exertion of running. I had to start at an even lower level than 1 minute of running--I measured my running in steps. It was something like 40 steps running to 40 steps walking. (Around the backyard, so no one could see me!).
All this is to say, start with the level you can do, and increase gradually. Good luck!

This is great advice, Avis here went from 40 steps of running to a really nice 10km race at ORW, so she should know!!

It is great when new runners come to the boards because sometimes us old folk who have done it before need this info too.
I often get too caught up in what "I used to" be able to do and get easily fed up with my running efforts these days.

The old Cool Running Couch-to-5k program is in my opinion one of the best for first timers (or those starting over)

I'm with Kara! I have to constantly remind myself I'm a beginner again not the half marathoner I use to be..... It all requires patience and keeping focused on the small improvements.....almost done a beginner program, started with run 5 walk 1 min (I had been running short 3k runs before) and now about to run 28min no walking. I still struggle at the end but I'm getting it done, breathing hard and talking myself through the last 10 min or so......but the first 20 min are getting easier lol
somedays, even my lucky rocketship undies don't help

Welcome to RM and to running! I add to the others that it is easier to start with walk/run intervals and add on the running time as you progress.
