Any fixie fans out there? I bought a custom built single-speed last week and had been riding it free-wheel so far.
But, I flipped my hub this morning and went for a ride and it went pretty good. Getting started is the trickiest part so far.
I'm starting to feel the love for fixed and wondered if there were any tips or tricks out there in the RM brain trust,
And ... a picture of my new sweetie:
riding fixed
OOooooo... she's got a blue chain. I love her already.
Name?
There's an article in Bicycle magazine about some linebacker in the states who rides fixed almost exclusively.

Are those Michelin Jet tires? If so, they are meant for dry conditions only... does NOT work in snow or muddy conditions. If you are looking for all around tires, try Ritchey SpeedMax's... they're pretty good at shedding snow.

Love it - I was looking at one last week, but not in the budget for this year. If I keep up my bike commuting may look into it for next year.
One of my best friends has one - loves it. But it does take some getting use to I hear.
This is the one I was looking at http://www.usedottawa.com/classified-ad/6660873
What did you pay for yours?

That's pretty cool, so there is a gear on each side, neat, makes sense.
So do many regular folks race with these Fixed types or is it mostly just for riding/commuting?

I have an MTB frame at home waiting for a conversion. it's on the 'winter to do list'
I'll do the ENO flip flop I think so that I don't have to ride it fixed all the time. Should make for a nice commuting option when i don't feel like riding the Euro

They aren't legal for road racing (unless it has brakes). But a fixed gear is basically a track bike... watch the velodrom stuff at the olympics and you will see fixies in action.
most people here riding them are couriers.

I rode a fixie when I was in the 'peg. Converted it back (put the gears back on) when I moved to Calgary. Couldn't quite manage the hills here.

They're Schwalbe Marathon Cross tires. Not really for snow either, so I'll switch them out come November or thereabouts.

More than I originally budgeted for, but not more than I feel it's worth. Over a grand anyway.

Exactly where I was coming from! It's fun to have the option to coast if it's a leisurely ride kind of day, and be working the whole way if not.
