I run because it's my passion, and not just a sport. Every time I walk out the door, I know why I'm going where I'm going and I'm already focused on that special place where I find my peace and solitude. Running, to me, is more than just a physical exercise...it's a consistent reward for victory!

I shall continue to use the phrase "banana hammock"

It's not just in bathing suits - look at shorts men wear for a variety of sports, most notably basketball.

Nice 80s basketball pic!

In other sports the clothes were never quite so revealing as speedos.

There's a middle ground between over-sized board shorts and tiny Speedo briefs (something akin to what Larry Bird is wearing in the photo I posted above).

Personally, I believe it's that straight men are afraid to be thought of as gay (or worse, be approached by someone who is). So anything they can do to hide their bodies, and the suggestion that they might be gay, they will do.

On the other hand shirts, in some sports, have become tighter. :D

Or maybe he just fills out his shirt better.

Your moobs [man-boobs] and your widening gut are going to be visible either way.

Aye, that may be true - but will the Speedo still be visable? If not, board shorts it is....

No room on a speedo for a cool pattern. I picked these up when I was in Hawaii, love 'em:

So I had a friend coming up from Texas a few years ago ... Had him CONVINCED that speedo's were illegal in Ontario, and that his luggage would be searched for them.

In Europe you'd actually be refused entry into public pools with shorts like that because they're considered "street clothes." My room-mate on my trip to France this year had to wear her tri suit to the public pool because she forgot her bathing suit, and they didn't want to let her in wearing it. They eventually conceded since she was from out of the country and it was at least made from Lycra.

Interestingly, the only place I see Speedos anymore is in the mountains, worn by europeans in the various hot springs.

A few weeks back in Radium, the pool was filled entirely with (a) sweaty Germans, identifiable by their hairy torsos and speedos and (b) sweaty triathletes from Wasa, identifiable by their body markings and need to keep doing laps even in a hot spring. Lets just say that my wife, not a fan of hot springs at the best of times, didn't have the most relaxing day.

Take a holiday to Mexico. The Mayan Riviera is full of Spaniards and Italians in teeny speedos regardless of age or BMI. They've brought their topless wives with them. You should bring your eye bleach.

I have been living in Brazil for a couple of months now. At the pool in my condo I have only seen speedos. At the beaches its about 70 / 30 split between speedos and board shorts. You can even see a lot of guys running wearing just speedos and shoes. Or wearing them shopping in grocery stores close to the beach or on the bus...

2013:
April: Mundy Pond 5k 22:39 (new PB)
May: New job on a new continent so who knows.
June: Mizuno 10 Miler Rio de Janeiro 1:23:36.
July: Rio de Janeiro Marathon 1:48:30 (new PB).

I always wear a speedo to the beach whether in Canada or elsewhere. I put my boardies over top when heading to the store, or boating, etc.

Euro's are less prudish about bare skin. Women are sometimes topless, men wear speedos, young children are naked.
Nude beaches are usually just around the corner from the regular beach too. Just remember to cover the bits with sunscreen too. ;-)

Due to TriCan (ITU) regulations about bare torsos, I have retired my speedo/croptop tri suit though. :-(
I don't need some jerk official DQ'ing me. And it's only good for days 30C+ anyways, which rarely happen in Canada.

Depends on the time of year. IME the speedo ratio goes down in March and up in May. And the only Speedo thong I ever saw was in May. My eyes still hurt.
