Katie's First Half Marathon in under 2hrs! long........
Wow, I did my first half in less than 2 hrs. I knew I could do 2:15 without a problem, I knew 1:45 was impossible, so that left 2 hrs as my goal, well 1:59:59 and I did finished in 1:59:26!
I tried to soak up the experience as much as I could, but going to a strange city on your own, with no friends or family there for support is a little lonely and just not as exciting as racing at home where your friends and fellow runners are.
As with my first tri, I was more nervous the days leading up to the half than the day of the race. I took the ferry over to Victoria earlier than planned on Saturday as I was just too nervous to sit at home any longer. I met a few people on board during the ride who were doing the half, but I couldn’t find them in the crowd on Sunday. Took in the pre-race dinner, where Dr. Jack Taunton spoke, what an inspirational man.
As I was staying very close to the start line, I literally ran from there to the start line after stretching and warming up. It was raining lightly, so I grabbed a light rain shell just before I left which was a wise decision as it kept me warm, and somewhat less wet then if I had no jacket. I couldn’t believe how many people were there when I got there, which was about 5 mins before the start. Just a sea of runners for 2 blocks. I just keep moving up to where I thought I should have started, which still wasn’t as close as I should have, but hey what did it matter was just so many people.
So off I went with the other 4700 runners, finding it difficult to find my own space almost thru the entire race. Since it was raining I couldn’t read my watch, for pace or distance, just time and I had no idea how fast I was going, until I got to 3k, holy cow, 14:49, OMG what the heck am I doing! In hindsight, maybe I shouldn’t have looked. The course has a few hills, nothing steep, just long. At around 10K I heard someone say they were on pace for 2 hrs and I passed them as I felt fine. We played cat and mouse for several km’s which was fine as I knew they were going for 2hrs as well. It took forever to reach 12 km’s, and then 13km’s seemed to be only a half km apart. On the last uphill at about 16km, my 2hr runner passed me, and I was feeling rough. My mind started playing tricks on me, I wanted to stop so badly, but I kept going. At 17km it was all downhill or flat so I tried to make up some time there. At 19km I looked at my watch and it was 1:49 something, so to make 2 hrs meant I had to do my last 2kms in under 11 mins. I really doubted this was likely, but tried my best and pushed myself hard. Of course ever turn was not the last. Was it ever going to end! I finally saw the finish line, the clock said 1:59:45 with about 15 feet left, so I knew I had it in bag. As I looked up it was 1:59:58 as ran under the sign, my watch said 1:59 something, and my chip time was 1:59:26.
Edit: I cried when I crossed the line, I'm hoping they were tears of joy!
I have decided that my unorthodox training has got to stop, although it has worked to a point, the stiffness in my thighs this morning tells me the proper training is missing. All in all a good race, I'm pleased with the results and I know there is room for improvement.

Great race, Katie. Ok, so think what you could do if your were more consistent? Oh, that is what you are doing.....

What a debut! Well done.
I really enjoyed your report and wish I could have been there with you.
woohoo!
Thank you Seuss and Thank you to everyone else for your congratulations.
Seuss, you were on my mind, especially as I finished, and as the massage therapist was saying it feels like you have rods of steel in your (saying your name lol) quads. He hoped I had someone to take care of me last night, so did I, namely him Memories of the waiter from Cardero's should be flashing thru your mind at this moment. This guy was just as cute if not more!
My legs are killing me. I don't know if its from not putting in the proper amount of training, or from just pushing myself so hard. I just figured out I ran the first 3 kms and last 2 kms at almost the same pace, with the last 2 being much harder to tolerate than the first 3.
So since I ran as you Seuss, does this mean I get to write another report when I do my next half in my name???????
